Question L-Lysine - Info Please

I would like to get some of this for Merson and am after recommendations for:

Best place to get it.
Best 'format' or way to administer - crush tablets / paste / split open tabs ? (Merson is very good at taking tablets as long as they're not too big.)
How much to give?
How often - Daily / weekly / twice weekly?

Plus any other info anyone feels may be pertinent.....

Many thank ewes, all suggestions much appreciated.

Re: L-Lysine - Info Please

Algie had 500mg of L-Lysine a day. The tablets are huge so I break them in half and crush between two spoon as mix in his wet food. The vets got me the first lot, but I purchased the second lot from Amazon and have also bought a different brand from the local health food shop.

Re: L-Lysine - Info Please

Absoluitely nowt to do with your question, but, thought I'd pip in, when I saw the title, lol! I take L-Lysine tablets from Solgar (very expensive but top of the range) yo keep my coldsores at bay and its the only thing that works 100%

Does Algie have or had herpes then Pixel? I know that 500mg is the recommendation for cats with a tendency to frequent outbreaks of the condition.

MB - Merson is a carrier yes?

Re: L-Lysine - Info Please

Hi Ianthi

Merson had a bad dose of cat flu when he was a kitten. About a month after he had gotten over it, he developed a corneal ulcer that was tough to get rid of. I put this down to him being run-down after his flu.

Over the years, that eye (which had 3 ops on it at the time) has remained sensitive and has been prone to ulcers from time to time. It always looks a bit red and watery in comparison to his other one.

Our new vet made a mutter about possible herpes when he examined Merson for the first time but nothing further has ever been done.

I was lookng at trying this as you suggested it some time back when I said that I regularly gave him echinacea to keep his immune system topped after being compromised by the cat-flu.

See, I do pay attention.

Re: L-Lysine - Info Please

If it's herpes then most definitely worth trying as it stops the virus replicating.

Hope you find it improves things for poor Merson.

I actually got mine in Holland and Barrett and although not the best place by any means at least I could source it quickly. It's also relatively cheap there. Believe they have a sale at the moment as well on some products-this may be included.

Let us know how you get on with it!

H&B was my first thought as I'll be walking right past them tomorrow but I thought the capsules looked a bit big.....

Can the capsules be split opened to get the contents inside and what strength for a 6kg cat? 500mg once a day????

As always, BIG thank you for your time and help, it's always much appreciated.

Re: L-Lysine - Info Please

You're welcome!

Yes, they ARE a bit on the big side *having just checked the bottle*! Mine are actually tablets. Not seen the capsules there.

Have a word with vet on next visit but I'd suggest 250mg ( half a tablet ) daily as an maintenance dose and increase this to 500mg during flare-ups. Sounds as if he hasn't had one for a while though which is a good sign!

Re: L-Lysine - Info Please

I'm also going to get some in as per the vets recommendation for Benji. Benji has started his treatment but will start a new thread on that!
