Kitten weights

Sorry everyone to post again now i'm worrying about how much they weigh and if it related to the heart murmers (see lower post back from vets)

De-de is 850grams
Dotty is only 650grams

Ive read they should be 100grams per week. They are 12 weeks so they must be tiny

Could this have something to do with their heart murmers?
their mum was very small also though

Oh god I thought I had years before I would be worrying like this again

Re: Kitten weights

From reading your other posts the vet thinks they have flea related anemia and more than likely have got/had worms. These both are factors in weight gain as it drains them of energy and the worms 'steal' (for want of a better word) the food from the kittens. Once they get over these problems they should pile of the weight. My foster kittens were really under weight a couple of weeks ago 402gms being the smallest at 7 weeks of age she has now gone up to 630 in less than two weeks and her brothers are even better. Make sure you babies can eat as much as they want/can and I am sure they will grow fine given time

Re: Kitten weights

thank you they have food all the time they eat well but after they have finished they always try to cover it.

they are fed 4 times a day 1/2 pouch each ish? they dont always clear the bowl. there is dry down all the time and have the kitten milk which they love.

The vet gave me advocate to split 1 pippette between the 2 of them.

Shall i put it on now? After their jabs? I cant remember what he said my mind was in turmoil!!

The woman i got them from said they were wormed and flead at the PDSA at 8 weeks the vet thinks they had lived with both worms and fleas before then
Could that really cause them this many problems? Oh my heart breaks for them they are just so adorable and I love them so much allready.

Re: Kitten weights

If poor De-de and Dotty have been wormy and suffering with fleas, they very possibly have not had the best start with their diet either. At least now all this is being addressed .You are doing all you can so you should start to them gaining weight soon.Is it possible to feed them more often for a while.you say they are not finishing 1/2 a pouch at a meal,so that is only 2 pouches a day each,is that right? How much dry food do they eat, roughly.I would try to feed more small meals throughout the day and if possible would try to replace the dry food with more wet food and stop the kitten milk put out water instead.Kittens should be eating as much as they want at this stage so if they have small meals and finish them over maybe 6 meals a day ,at least until they start to pick up weight.2 pouches each a day is not a lot so the more you can get into them the better.Good luck and please try not to worry .

Re: Kitten weights

Being fast asleep is normal they are still only babies they will have mad hour or so after eating and then sleep well.

I would wait a couple of days before using the advocate only as you have to put it on in the same area as the needle went in for the vaccs and it often stings them if put on around this 'sore' spot from vacc.

Try not to worry too much as long as they eating playing, pooping and weeing then they are normal kittens just with a bit of a bad start that good food and time will fix

Re: Kitten weights

My Raggie was totally floored with his first vaccinations, didnt eat much and slept for hours, right through until the following day.Have you read hobbs a-z guides at the top of this page. You want to be feeding a high meat content food,if it is a good quality high meat food then there is no need to feed kitten food, infact most good quality foods dont have a kitten version.Ordering on line(zoo plus for example)is where the best range of food is to be found, but the problem is that to make it worth while you need to order a fair amount and there is no guarantee that your kittens will eat it.I'm not the best person to advise you as to what is the best food to try as Meeko my little "darling" has refused most of the good stuff out there. Here's the link but I'm sure you have had a read through it already.A-Z of wet food for cats

Will do I just want to get it on them and start sorting it out another day or so wont hurt will it?

They are very dazed is this normal? Dotty has got up licked some jelly of had a drink and climbed back to her sister De-de just keeps waking up looking around but not moving so not like them!! If it wasnt for that bloody murmour I would know thats the jabs!!! I have had cats before i feel like a total worry mummy. Half of me wishes i hadnt gone (thats the irrational half of course)

Gonna be a long night me thinks

I think(sorry hobbs if I have got this wrong)if you look at the first line,or so ,of each food listed there will be a reference to whether the food is "complete" or "complimentary"(ie treat food). Also in the general info nearer the bottom of each food listed there will be a general description of that food.Anything in red is to draw your attention to a particular ingredient or comment ect.Hope this helps.
