back from the vets bit of a shock!!

Hi all De-de and Dotty are back from the vets after their first jabs.

The vet picked up they both had a heart Murmer!! yes I lost it brought the last couple of months back to me. I did over react and made a bit of a fool of myself I think...

He thinks it is anemeia related there was alot of flea dirt still so he thinks they lived with the fleas for a long time ie the whole 8 weeks!! the woman i got them from said she took them to the pdsa at 8 weeks and they flead and wormed them then. When i got them they were a few live ones on but i managed to comb them out.

He has given me advocate which I will use tomorrow (dont want them to have jabs and flea stuff in one go)

Can someone reassure me here i am devastated.

He said they are growing well if they run around and dont get out of breath it may be in 3 weeks its totally gone, however with them both having it what if its genetic.

Has anyone been through this I feel sick to the stomache

on a lighter note De-De was 850gm chunky girl (is that what they weigh in)
and Dotty was 650gm (little baby)

Re: back from the vets bit of a shock!!

Don't panic many many kittens have a heart murmur that they just seem to grow out of plus the vet doesn't seem worried and has given you a plausible explanation as to what they think is causing it. So sort the flea's keep them healthy and see what happens in 3 weeks This is of course coming from somebody who panics terribly when my kitties are ill but it achieves nothing and the cats will pick up on it, so breathe, have a cup of tea and relax.

That's what I was about to say - a lot of kittens have murmurs that disappear. Don't worry yet.

Re: back from the vets bit of a shock!!

Thank you thats what my mother said (human nurse)

I really hope so why would they both have the same sounding heart though?

My mum did say Saturday when she came to see them that they may be a little anemic. Their gums are pale pink.

i have never seen them out of breath they dont stop. They go at it for at least an hour and a half then flake out for and hourish is this right?

I have done that stupid GOOGLE THING and i am now sat crying I cant lose them i would be devastated.

Why are they born with these things and would they both have it and grow out of them?

Never ever google just remember that people tend to only do articles about the worst case scenarios and that is what google throws up, not the 'my cat had a slight heart murmur, then it went away, the end'

The heart valves are not always fully formed at birth and for some time after. This leads to a juvenile heart murmur which they grow out of as they mature. It is not uncommon for a vet to detect heart murmurs at first vaccs which have disappeared by the time they go back for the second lot three weeks later. It isn't a fault or an indication of anything serious at this stage. Stop Googling and worry later if there is actually something to worry about - chances are there won't be.

Iheartcats will become famous soon enough
Re: back from the vets bit of a shock!!

My Amber was born with a heart murmur and died aged 16 so don't worry! It never stopped Amber from enjoying a long and happy life.

I've never heard of Advocate. My old Buster and Amber suffered terribly with fleas and I spent an absolute fortune on sprays, frontline, program injections you name it! In the end after they passed away we had to get the pest control man in

I'm hoping that this time round we will be able to get on top of the flea situation.

Sorry to hijack your post but just wanted to say that fleas are a pain!

Re: back from the vets bit of a shock!!

Thank you I couldnt believe it they are so healthy they dont stop iy just wasnt what i was expecting to hear I was more worried about their weight before i went now this!!!

He has put heart murmour prob due to slight anemia on the records as i still have a few days of my activation period on insurance if it is more he said he will argue the case.

I'm now worried when they run around worried when they go to sleep!!!

They have come in from the jabs had a bowl of food each and gone to sleep!! cue panic! Logically i know they have been to the vets been messed , car journey irrationally i am thinking is it their little hearts

It's going to be a long 3 weeks i think

Re: back from the vets bit of a shock!!

It's just nature I'm afraid - I'm assuming they are still very young - it is really not unusual for young kittens to sound a bit murmury and for it to go away as they grow - it's just an immature system thing. I'm also assuming they are moggies so neither mum nor dad will have had any genetic tests etc so you couldn't have known. Please don't let it worry you yet. MOST will grow out of it - the fact that both of them have it at the moment is just an unhappy coincidence - they are playing like lunatics and well and healthy there is no need to worry yourself yet.

There's nothing genetic to test for in a juvenile heart murmur. If the OP had not bothered to get them vaccinated on the dot they'd probably never have known because it would have resolved itself. I shouldn't think there's a breeder who hasn't heard the words "there's a bit of a murmur there" from their vet at least once in their life at first vaccs. It's more common for pet owners to learn about it with puppies - for no other reason than pedigree puppies are sold younger than pedigree kittens.
