Greedy, overweight cat

One of my cats, Oscar, (who I'm hoping to rehome) is extremely greedy. He bolts his food and consequently often vomits after having eaten.

He is also very overweight!

My other cat, Tilly, feeds on demand (or she did before Oscar came along). Oscar will bolt his food and then eat Tilly's too if I let him.

I'm now trying to encourage him to lose weight and feed him little but often. Obviously this necessitates me having to pick Tilly's feed up and hide it away from Oscar.

Oscar has only been on this weight loss programme for a few days now and I feel so sorry for him when I give Tilly her food so that she can have another 'graze'. However, I know I have to stay strong for Oscar's benefit.

Can anyone think of a better way?

Tizzi

Re: Greedy, overweight cat

I have a 6 month old kitten that eats like a horse and will nick my other cats food as well if i let him, i have never had a cat like this before and is so greedy, always jumping on the kitchen counters for "our" food.

Drives us mad.

Not sure what we can do about it, i just lock him out of the kitchen now when i am in the kitchen and also watch him when he is eating.

Tizzi, have you thought about getting him a treat ball? You can put some dry food (but only a bit) in it and let him work for the food. But be sure to subtract the amount of dry from his daily allowance.

Or feed them in different rooms if possible.

Can I ask why you're hoping to rehome him?

If he is 6 months old Kathryn he should be given as much to eat as he wants.
Vampyria and Bonnie82 like this.

"Can I ask why you're hoping to rehome him?"

It's a long story Aurelia but basically he's not really my cat, lovable though he is and I much prefer the quieter life with my Tilly.

I feed him a pouch in the morning and evening and he has dry food all day, if i fed him what HE wanted all the time he would be like GARFIELD!!

I don't think there is a "better way" as such, because he's always going to feel like Tilly is getting more than him because she gets to eat more often than him. From experience of having a similarly greedy cat, I can say he will get used to it and come to accept it eventually, as long as you give him set meal times and don't deviate from them.
