Starved cat help!?!

Ok, so after 9 days missing, Indi is home. Hes got a few cuts and bruises, nothing too bad, But i am seriously concerned about his weight. He is a solid Snow Bengal, weighs about 14lbs in pure muscle. But hes now down to 10lbs.

Im very concerned about his liver shutting down after been starved for so long. We have been giving him tinned food, been bank holiday no where is open to get anything better, we got him back at 6pm today. Going to get appointment in vets tomorrow.

Hes lethargic, tired and his skeleton is so obvious it makes me well up.

Im going to stay up all night to watch over him. If anyone has had a similar situation with their mog and has some words of advice, i would be hugely greatful x

Re: Starved cat help!?!

While a vet check is very wise under the circumstances, the fact he's eating is a very good sign. While hepatic lipidosis is a very serious risk with starvation, not all cats actually succumb-for various reasons some are more prone than others.

Good luck with vet visit. I'd ask vet to run a full blood test as well.

Re: Starved cat help!?!

When Minnii went missing for 2 weeks she lost an amazing amount of weight. She always had been light but went from 3.4kgs to 2.5 kgs - she was all skin and bone. We just feed her little and often and she is now back up to 3.4kgs and seems fine. Many cats in the wild live on the edge of complete starvation throughout the winter and they don't all then die of liver failure in the spring. Don't automatically fear the worse. The liver in humans is a self healing organ - not sure about in cats. Just take it easy and try not to worry too much.

Re: Starved cat help!?!

True, Spid, if caught early, HL can be reversed. Also, HL is more likely in cats that are overweight and then starved than in leaner cats, apparently. But I think a vet visit is definitely in order with a blood test as Ianthi suggests.

Glad he is back!
