Sorry to hear this but hopefully it is a hairball which will pass naturally and surgery won't be necessary. Presumed he's pooed so didn't consider constipation which incidentally can also be a cause of vomiting.
I'd imagine the vet is admitting him as a precaution. Hope he's much better soon.
