One of my kittens has been prescribed Metacam oral suspension by my vet. Ive just researched this drug and found it to be potentially lethal for cats (apparently there's a fine margin between a safe dose and a dangerous dose and it can cause kidney failure) Needless to say Im not very happy about this, Ive stopped using it and I'm going to have it out with my vet on Friday. (in my opinion it's totally irresponsible to prescribe it for a kitten if it's known to have had these side effects on adult cats).

Has anyone used it and had any problems?

I had it prescribed as an anti inflammatory for Oscar when he injured his leg. I never used it though as it was only prescribed as a just in case measure.

I wouldn't use anything I wasn't happy with without checking it first

Hiya lass, hope you and your lot are all ok, I seem to remember having it sent home with me once but with a warning that the bottle prescribed was for the size of a big dog and that for a small cat had to be reduced accoringly. I wouldnt be happy using it on a kitten as I think I had it for an adult female that had a full hysterectomy

Yeah I remember now Angelina, it was my tortie that lost her litter as she had a womb infection, she ended up staying at vets for a full week and had all her girlie bits removed, they sent her home with some metacam amongst other things and I lost her that very same night. You are sooooooooooooooooo right to have your doubts about it! mad:

I thought I would come on and post this subject because it's a warning to anyone that's currently using this on their cat OR might be prescribed it by their vet in the future.

In my opinion DONT USE IT..............Ive been given it today by my vet, Ive given my kitten the recommended dosage for today already but since then have done some research on it. Here's the link Metacam Risks in Cats

The rest of the bottle is going back on Friday morning and the quack who calls herself a vet (she hates breeders and likes to let you know that, Ive had numerous run-ins with her and also put up with a mis diagnosis) She doesn't seem to mind taking the money though??? Im fuming that she is prepared to prescribe something like that for a young kitten.mad:

Ha! stoopid vet, I changed my practice cos of ignoramouses like that Metacam is really really strong stuff at least my new ones told me that, they even said if I only used a tiny bit that they would take it back

I think there should be something in place that monitors these vets and how they practice, such as an INDEPENDANT watchdog. Bad vets are getting really common these days, over priced and bloody arrogant with it.

Yes Chrissy it's the oral suspension that is a big no no for cats, the post operative one time injection is supposed to be fine though personally I wouldn't have that either. It sounds just too risky.eek:

Yeh agree! I got one over on the vets today.... she had looked into pkd testing for me and come up with the marvelous result that the lab they use would take a blood sample and it costs about 40 quid to have it done. I said fine but I've already got it sorted, going to send mine off to America. She looked astonished and said wouldnt that be very expensive? I had great pleasure in replying...no just 21 quid per cat, smirk

I bet she wont have appreciated that bit of advice. Good on you girl. Now she's learnt something new and it didn't even cost her a penny. I bet she still charged you for her time though? Must have been so disappointed to hear that no blood necessary for a PKD test........and no money for her either.

Im pretty generous in some of my advice too ??????? and I'll be giving it full on come Friday.

there has been a new formula made and it's not as bad as it used to be and if fed with food you should have nothing to worry about.
