£2000 is a lot of money, but those specialists are, over £1000 just to walk through the door. Is it something he can live with for a while to give him time to grow on a bit.

Its an awful decision, definitely a rock and a hard place. I would say though being so young in some ways could be in his favour as they heal quicker. They can endure drastic surgeries, like Aud's Mum's Barney and come out the other side. Vets are also very good at giving you worst case scenario so as not to raise your hopes.

I suppose money aside and thats a big aside, it would come down to what sort of character the baby is. Could he cope with the stress of everything and bounce back then maybe its worth a chance, but that is very easy for me to say. Whatever decision you come to, it will be the right one, because you would have come to it putting your baby first.
That is what my plan is Saikou. I want to maintain him first, keep him going till he is big and strong enough to cope with an operation like that. In my opinion because it has happened to a young kitten who is growing and changing just about every day, there is no reason to suspect that things could not alter dramatically given a little time. Basically I think a kitten would cope with this much better than an adult cat.

To maintain him daily, I have to make sure his stools are of a soft consistency and I have to 'milk' his motions out after every meal, that is all really............the boy can eat for England so he does provide me with 'a handful' on every occasion The vet said the other day that he had improved so there's every chance that it could continue to do that.

I am interested in going down the holistic route, that would be better for him in the long run. If you know anyone who you are happy to recommend then I would certainly be interested.

So if I accidentally overdosed (four or five drops instead of three) up to the point of finding out the risks on the internet, I would probably have still thought it was ok to give to my kitten, there is no warning label on the bottle anyway.

What's the point of asking the vet who prescribed it in the first place, she's not going to change her opinion and admit she's wrong.

you should not have been given Metacam with out the packaging and instructions and especially not with out the administering syringe!!! don't use that and take it back and get the proper package. they are not allowed to do that. mad: you can believe what you want on the internet. or you can do some proper research and speak to other vets and the pharmaceutical companies. most of the things you will read on the internet will be negative because no many people post about the positives unless you go looking for it! most of the negative information is in rare cases or was years ago when the formula they were using for cats was the same as the dogs. your only other alternative would be to get Rimadyl. but there is no oral for cats that i'm aware of it would be injectable by the vets. oral Rimadyl is not for cats under any circumstance. I had a long chat about it tonight at work for you and my boss didn't think you had anything to worry about as long as you were using the dose for cats and not overdosing. depending on how much the kitten weighs it should be 0.017mg per drop and dose should be 0.1mg per kg on the first day and then 0.05mg per kg. using the dropper on the bottle and not the syringe that comes with it it's 6 drops per kg first day and then 3 drops per kg there after.

i really hope it sorts the little one out. it doesn't sound like they want him on it long term just enough to get the swelling down so they can work out what's the culprit. all the best and let me know if i can be of any assistance.

The only person I can think of off hand is in Oxfordshire, but very well known in his field is Chris Day WELCOME! That may be too much of a trek for you, but he maybe able to recommend someone near by he knows of who could help. My friend went to him when her cat was diagnosed with Lymphatic Sarcoma. He recommended a number of treatments that he could have alongside his chemo. The thing that really impressed my friend was when he first looked at him generally all over, he straight off asked if he was clumsy when jumping onto and off things. When she thought about it had to admit he was. Chris Day manipulated his hips a bit and he has been different ever since. No one else had noticed his problem, but I guess because holistic vets take an overall approach to anything rather than focusing on the main problem presented to them he was able to pick it up.

I think its very encouraging that your baby has improved with no treatment
long may that continue. Even if he still ends up having to have surgery, any thing that lessens the complexity can only be a good thing. He is definitely a lucky boy to have such a caring Mum (((((hugs))))) I know how hard it is when you have to make difficult decisions about their health that no one can really help you with, it does tear you apart inside, but you have to trust that inner voice

Re: Metacam

Ive used metacam for both dogs and cats (Williams on it now) and its been ok.
My vet would not prescribe anything that was dangerous, he's a good and very compassionate and understanding vet.
When i had to let Sweep go he cried with me

Interesting! Would you care to comment further on why they are not allowed to do that. Give me more details so I can confront the 'vet' that did do just that.

they shouldn't give out medication with out the proper warnings and instructions or the box labeling what it is. some do and get away with it but technically they shouldn't with something like that. the bottle should be sealed and in the box with pamphlet and syringe. with a label on the front with the vet's prescription stamp or sticker with dosage instructions and warnings to keep out of reach of children.

i don't have documentation of this but i'm sure it's an RCVS rule. you could report the practice to the RCVS

RCVS Online / Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons

i'm in the middle of something but you could skim this and see if there's anything helpful as ammunition

RCVS Online / Practice Standards / Practice Standards Scheme

good luck angie! xx
