Re: How to cope with cage rest

Glad to hear he's recovering well. Ah! I see it was his elbow! I did wonder at the time and thought I'd commented on the fact that shoulder dislocation in cats is very rare indeed.

Yes, both neutered and entire cats do unfortunately cross roads and get run over but toms are far more likely to wander in search of females thus increasing their chances of encountering dangers. It's not unheard of for some to go missing for weeks on end!

When at the vets having the wire removed is a perfect opportunity to have him neutered!

Re: How to cope with cage rest

I know it is a perfect time to have him done, I've just got so much whizzing around my head at the moment I just don't know what to do first. What with him driving us crazy to go out at 4am, having to give 2 antibiotic tablets to a cat a day for two weeks, fencing the garden off and deciding if we should get him a friend. Plus I've just read the post on toxic plants and guess what my garden is full of them!

I think I need a lie down lol

Cats wander into the road neutered or not, you have only got to look at the posts on here to see how many RTA's there are. My neutered cat in fact a lot of the cats in my road cross the road to go into the field for a play.

But you've made some good points about thinking long and hard about breeding Vinny and it won't be a willy-nilly just fancying some kittens kinda thing. I suppose after going through IVF and not being able to have children myself, my pussycats have been my babies. Losing Prawnboy my 15 yr old cat last year devastated us, I suppose we are just looking for something good to happen for a change.

It's a big decision and one that won't be taken lightly, Vinny will be sedated when he has his wire out in a couple of weeks and that would be the perfect time to have him snipped if we are going to. We just need to decide, he's a Russian/British blue x

I expect when you went into breeding you didn't take it lightly and I'm sure it's a lot of hard work, but worth it? I don't mean in a monetary way btw, but the joy of it all?

EDIT :darn it I can't I think you might need a certain number of post before you get private messages privileges.

Ho hum.

I am sorry to hear about the IVF and I know what you mean about wanting something good (as in joy not money - there is no money in it for me and many others) in your life. I can't imagine a life without my children so can imagine how hard it must be for you. Bringing any new life into the world is wonderful.

Okay - I went in to breeding because I had finally found a cat that was long haired that my husband wasn't allergic to and sort of wanted to pass on that breed to others that weren't allergic, and it had the added bonus of having kittens. I know now I didn't quite go about it the right way well enough. I did a fair bit of research but not enough and if anyone wanted to get into breeding (and we always need new breeders) I would suggest talking to other breeders first (this is the bit I didn't do) and certainly getting out to shows. I don't think you have to show first before breeding though many recommend it. My new breeding queen, I am doing even more 'right' and I am happy I couldn't do it any better.

I don't think you should breed from your boy - he is cross and not registered, and actually having a stud is much harder - you need at least 3 girls to keep a stud happy.. If you seriously want to think about breeding then do it properly - get a GCCF, TICA or FiFE registered girl of your chosen breed and go out to stud - let someone else have the hard work and SMELL! If you are really interested - see if you can leave me a message or a visitors message on my profile and I will try to get my email to you safely and I'll go into it more.

Thank you for your lovely reply and great advice.

We decided not to breed Vinny and he was castrated yesterday, we will be looking for a friend for him in the future after he's recovered from his op etc.

But the strangest thing happened this morning a lovely little but very skinny cat appeared in our garden and was trying to drink out of the pond, so of course I went and got her some fresh water and couldn't help myself giving her a little bit of food as she looked so skinny.

I spoke to my neighbour and she said that the cat had been in her garden meowing too, but no collar so she might be a stray. It's early days yet but I hope she visits us often, she was a lovely little thing.
