Vets and hairballs

If I take my two to the vets over hairballs are they going to look at me like I'm stupid? I feel like I should be able to help them somehow myself - and I'm not entirely sure what a vet will do to help hairballs?

We've moved on now to not eating (which I'm assuming is down to the hairballs) and dry heaving/heaving resulting in small pools of clear watery substance.

At a bit of a loss..

Re: Vets and hairballs

Just done a google search for vet prescriptions for hairballs and it has come up with stuff like Katalax to aid in the passage of them so maybe your vet will be able to prescribe something for them. Also are you sure they are suffering from hairballs??? Cats can only go so long without eating before they get ill so if they off their food and non productive heaving I would maybe call vet and get them seen. Vets have heard it all most of the time so wont look at you silly for going with hairballs IMO

Take them to the vets, no vet worth their salt will think you're stupid.

I would definitely take them to the vets because I don't think it's hairballs as it seems such a strange coincidence that they both seem to be suffering.
Aurelia and Kittenfostermummy like this.

Re: Vets and hairballs

I was going with hairballs as that's what's been hanging out of their mouths everytime they 'hack', they just can't get it out in one foul swoop which in itself is a concern because I'm sure cats normally just hack them up without a problem.

Re: Vets and hairballs

They've been slotted in today in the last emergency spot at 4.10, otherwise there was nothing until Tuesday.. Feeling a bit guilty, doesn't strike me as an emergency!

With the w/end looming it may become an emergency even if you dont think it is at the moment.Better to get this sorted before it is.

Re: Vets and hairballs

If your cats have stopped eating then it's not a good idea to wait until the next available appointment - your situation is an emergency so don't feel guilty about it. It's not as if you just want their claws clipping
And I'm sure no decent vet is going to think you're stupid.
