food intolerance?

I have posted on here recently about my 14 week old Kitten Marley. He had a very upset tummy and, to cut a long story short, afterb feeding plain chicken for 2 days, his stools firmed up. However after starting to add some Hills I/D at the advice of the vet (this is only temporary until i receive delivery of Animonda Carny from zooplus), his stools are becoming loose again. Am I right in thinking that his loose stools are down to a food intolerance?

Re: food intolerance?

sounds like it - I'd stick him back onto the chicken until your order turns up and then mix slowly

Re: food intolerance?

Thank you Spid, how long is it safe for my kitten to be on just chicken or is there anything i could add to it that wont upset his tummy but make it a bit more of a balanced diet? I ordered the other food yesterday and it says three to four working days for delivery.
Thank you Ruthie88, I am not sure whether its afish oils but it is definitely something in the 'junk food' they sell for pets in this country!

Re: food intolerance?

He'll be fine - I would not worry for another few days or so - and then the week or so gradually adding in the other will still be fine - you could try scrambled eggs made with water if you wanted.

Re: food intolerance?

Did he have diarrhoea when he came to you? What were you feeding before he started having a dicky tum?

Did you tell the vet that the I/D is not helping? They might suggest another food to put him on to for the time being as well as doing a stool test just to rule out any bacterial/parasitic issues (though not terribly likely if he firms up on the chicken).

I take it is the wet I/D. That consists mainly of pork as well as some grains and chicken.

Some kittens don't do very well with food changes; hence the old adage to introduce new foods really slowly - starting off with tiny amounts of the new food mixed in with the old stuff and over the course of a week or two gradually changing the ratios. When you introduced the ID after the chicken, did you do it gradually?

Re: food intolerance?

Thank you Hobbs2004, No he didnt have diarrhoe when he came to me. I got him at 8 weeks and he was eating Iams wet food. At 10 weeks old he had his first vaccination after which he was a bit unwell, not eating/drinking for 14 hours. Then 2 days later he started having soft stools. When I went back for his second vaccination i told the vets all of this and they checked his temp, felt his tummy, checked hydration etc. The vet thought his temp was borderline so said to come back the next day and also gave me Prokolin. After the prokolin his stools became runny and the next day we saw a different vet and his temperature was fine so he had the second vaccination and the vet was not worried about his stools. This time he was ok but His stools remained runny and one night even contained some mucous and a small amount of blood. So in the morning I put him on chicken and rice but he was still runny with no mucous or blood so took away the rice. He then had one bowel movement that was like toothepaste but yellow. I phoned the vets who said it was a positive sign that the texture had improved and recommended getting some Hills Id. He started having very small amounts of the hills id mixed with chicken and didnt have a bowel movement for the next 36 hours. Which then i was a bit worried in case he may be going the other way so increased the amountt of the id. Last night he had a bowel action that was the right colour and was formed but slightly runny at the edges! So I was thinking great! so continued increasing the Id but today he had a bowel movement that was the right colour but was quite runny again. He has remained completely active and normal in every other way throughout and his hydration levels have been fine throughout.
