Re: Feeding Raw

I tried Iams hairball for my girl. Ended up all the cats having it. It firmed the poo a little but gave them all the most horrible smelling poo ever. The poo was big and stunk the entire house out. I took them all off it and in the end found that rc kitten and rc 33 had her stools fine.

Like Toxoplasmosis it is normally passed on through faeces this is confirmed as there is a high infection rate in dairy cows and they don't eat meat. There are reports that this can be passed on through raw meat but there is little actual research that confirms this.
Yep I agree I had realised that because of the name, but it was a raw feeding website which spoke specifically about feeding raw mince to cats.

I have so many times and on so many websites that all mince should be frozen before feeding to cats to kill any potential micro-organisms. But if people are serious about raw feeding then they can read this for themselves when they research.

Thank you KK Well my old vet was aware but basically said I had to do a full feacal count if nothing showed up there then give the cat back or he would get over it himself anywhere between 9 months-2years Right ok I don't think so!! Soon had him creeping when I told them I was leaving little too late tho I'm afraid. Pleased to say he has finished his course of tablets & just need to wait 14 days to do a retest, fingers crossed it's gone

I would appreciate it if you could give me some more information such as how much to feed and what types of raw you give etc....just so I know where to start!

I would recommend feeding raw only, at least in then beginning. So no biscuits. Do it as simple as possible. Try minced lamb with some carrot puree (homemade) for a week and see if something happens with the poo. That's always what I recommend as a start. If it works and the diarrhoea goes away the cat should eat this lamb diet for another week or two in order to let the intestines heal, but you'll need to start adding a few minerals, vitaminas and taurine in this stage. But you can go for a week without any supplements.

If you for some reason don't feel comfortable with raw mince or if the cat won't eat it raw you can cook it slightly.

Going to try this with my boy who has had the runs since i got him. Been to the vets, samples sent off, nothing and it seems to be a food thing so would like to try raw with him and see how he goes
How much would you feed an adult cat (4kg) per day with this? How much carrot do you add? Also what kind of supplements do you recommend for adding once things settle.
Many thanks

Re: Feeding Raw

I would never feed my cats raw meat of any kind. But i do get chicken livers, pet mince, and fish bits to cook them as treats. The chicken livers are 50p per bag from a meat stall in town and so is the pet mince wich is 25p a pack. (1 pack would feed a large dog 1 meal) And i get a big bag of fish bits from the fish market for 50p - £1.00 Once cooked i hate taking the bones out because the fish meat is so sticky when cooked. lol but i do it for my cats. We go fishing in whitley bay and catch fresh mackeral from the sea to steam at home for my cats when we stay with a friend in her carevan.

You generally feed 2% of body weight per day when feeding raw. For a 4kg cat this equates to 80g per day. I don't know about carrot as I don't know anyone who suppliments with it. Taurine is in all the meat you feed and stuff like poultry dark meat and heart is especially high in taurine so I don't see any need to supplement that. Calcium comes from the bones. If your cats won't eat bone then you can supplement with a pinch of ground eggshell powder. Fish body oil is good for omega-3s if you're not feeding grass fed/wild
meat.

Just wanted to add, the amount you need to feed will vary depending on the cat - I have a growing, big Maine Coon who's over 5kg now and he gets 150g per day. It's best to start on 80g, then see how it goes. If your cat starts getting skinny, feed more

And agree about the supplements - as long as the cat eats bones and organ meats in addition to meat, there's no need for supplements other than fish body oil (NB! Not cod liver oil).

I don't see any reason for including carrots, or any other vegetables for that matter

Re: Feeding Raw

Only one of mine is liking the raw mince at the moment. 3 of them pick at it! Still better than not touching it at all.
