Re: Feeding Raw

Cooked white fish should only be given once a week at the most. White fish contains very little in essential amino acids and vitamins for a cat. A better option is uncooked mackerel or sardines. They contain omega 3 which is beneficial for a cats coat and skin.

Re: Feeding Raw

The pork issue is a bit of a myth nowadays. There used to be concerns over trichinosis which is a parasite that affected pigs and caused serious problems in anything that ate it. Nowadays this is eradicated from pigs bred in the UK. There is still a possibility that wild game especially boar can pass it on but most suppliers of game freeze it for at least 2 weeks to ensure that the parasite is dead.

I may beable to beat your £3.50 / kilo rabbit price. Check my website and give me a call or drop me an email.

I'm sure they'll be fine with the mince, it's just a bit more risky than regular meat I give mine mince too, when I have some spare from my own dinner, but I wouldn't go out and specifically buy it for them.

I found this raw feeding thing to be quite scary when I first started reading about it, but it's quite simple really. Just think of what a prey would contain, and then try to replicate it. So, mostly just meat, and then a little bone and a little liver or other organ meat. That's it really! Then give some raw fish once a week and you're all set.

Re: Feeding Raw

don't forget to worm your pets properly with a broad spectrum wormer if you are going to feed raw. (i.e. milbemax, drontal, or profender) as Panacur will not be sufficient to cover all the worms your cat will be at risk of with some raw meats. game birds, rabbits, pork and meat that has been left out for flies and other parasites to lay their young on can be a risk. regular worming with a broad spectrum wormer in combination with a multi flea/worm treatment (i.e. Frontline COMBO, Stronghold, or Advocate) should prevent any concern.

I'm really working on feeding mine on raw but my Bengal is not into meats! I've tried everything from fish, raw and cooked beef, prawns(raw and cooked), chicken(raw and cooked, boiled and grilled!) and no luck so far! Trouble on the other hand is a porker! and will have it all hahah but i can't get her to eat wings, only raw or cooked chicken pieces. I'm going to see if i can get some ground up chicken with bone from the butcher next week and see if that goes.

Re: Feeding Raw

Raw fish should NOT be fed to cats as it contains something that destroys a vitamin. (?) sorry to be so vague but I can never remember the full details! I'm sure if you google it you'll find it

i thought that was cod liver oil... or maybe thiamine but i would have thought that was if you fed it a lot(daily) and nothing else. never heard of not feeding raw fish to cats. do they have special ovens in the wild?

Re: Feeding Raw

thiamine, that's it!

I've read many times that raw fish should not be fed to cats. I don't know that many cats actually do eat fish in the wild although I think there is one called the "Fishing Cat" isn't there?

yes, thiaminase destroys thiamine but if you're only feeding raw fish occasionally i don't think you need to worry about it. this is listed as a warning so that raw fish isn't fed regularly or daily. many people assume because of media and here say that cats love milk and fish so then feed them nothing but it! as we savvy in cat all know this is not healthy! the benefits of some of the raw oily fish over weigh the lack of thiamine intake when given occasionally.

Re: Feeding Raw

Is it true that feeding raw can help with persistent diarrhoea too??? My stud boy has had diarrhoea since we got him hime and after numerous vet visits, diets and treatments, nothing has worked. All tests have come back clear so there is nothing physically wrong with him that we can treat.

Just wondering whether a raw diet alongside a sensitive biscuit would help.

Re: Feeding Raw

Mine have Raw mince, chopped up chicken or lamb twice a day in addition to their RC persian dry. They love it and thrive off it! (except when they all have colds!! )

Mine wont touch fish - of any variety!!!

My vet advised this when we brought Barney home after his op -within a week he was double his previous weight. Mince is quite rich anyway so this helps to put weight on.
