Kitten food

The kittens I am getting are on Morrisons own pouches (?) and she says they will eat any dry kitten food. Can anyone recommend other wet food that is easily available as I don't have a Morrisons near me. Am not sure of the quality of Morrisons own pouches either?

Also, can anyone recommend good dry kitten food.

Thanks

Re: Kitten food

Morrisons is poop.

I am having the same issue trying to find a decent quality food that my cats will eat.

Hi Life is suppose to be good at 60% meat but i was discouraged when we found a kidney in it that the cats couldnt chew through. We also couldnt get through it with a knife.

Re: Kitten food

Personally I wouldn't feed any dry myself.

I would go to a morrisons and pick up some pouches as a complete change will not be good for the kittens. Use those pouches to wean them onto a good high meat content food (adult food is fine if it's good quality) by mixing in old with new to avoid stomach upsets.

Hobbs a-z of wet food is a good place to start, easily available online from zooplus are ones such as animonda carny, bozita, Grau and smilla.
buffie and kerrypn like this.

Re: Kitten food

I would highly recommend looking on zooplus for food-it is really easy to use, free delivery on orders over £19 and has a great choice. I feed my kitties on ANimonda Carny/Bozita wet food and they LOVE it. I also supplement with Applaws, which you can buy on zooplus or get from pets at home. Thats a bowl licked clean treat Cant comment on dry food as I dont feed mine any dry

She's giving me the food they have left and I will nip to Morrisons when I go to pick them up - there is one in the town where they are.

Thanks, will have a look at that thread. Are there any good ones you can get in supermarkets or p@h?

If you don't feed any dry food do they need to be fed more wet instead?

Re: Kitten food

As I said, 'kitten' food is really not necessary with a good quality food. Good dry foods are orijen and acana, but really should be a small portion of the diet.

The range in PAH and Supermarkets is honestly very poor. The one brand I would recommend from PAH is one called Purely which do a 90% meat pot. It is a very strange texture, my boys either love it or hate it depending on mood, and they have not disclosed meat/offal ratios when asked so I wouldnt recommend it as a staple of their diet.

Ordering online is really the easiest, cheapest, and healthiest way to go for your cats.

If you get enough pouches to feed them for two weeks it should give you plenty of time to do a gradual food switchover. And remember, kittens should be offered unlimited wet food, ignoring guidelines on packets until older

*edit as you changed your question *

Naturally if you are not feeding dry you may have to feed more wet. However that is a good thing in mine and many others more qualified than myself, as cats need the moisture.

The second post in this thread will shed more light: Feeding cats for beginners (and more seasoned cat owners alike)

Thanks the dry would be more for when I'm out, just so they have something if they're hungry as don't want to leave wet out.

There's so many to choose from I don't know where to start will take a look at that thread you mentioned though. So am I looking for something with quite high meat percentage?

When you say unlimited..would you leave it down while you're in (I really don't want to leave it down when out), or just for a certain amount of time and obviously feeding frequently.

The kitties are just over 4 months old if that's any help..not sure if it makes much difference?

Re: Kitten food

I personally leave wet out whilst at work. I have done overnight also (up to 8 or so hours) and I have never have any issues. Its always eaten when I get back and so far they havent had any issues

What i tend to look at in Hobbs thread is meat percentage and Hobbs personal opinion which is written at the bottom usually. The rest goes right over my head to be honest, but I look at what she thinks based on her knowledge of those complicated things and thats what I use to judge

Honeslty I wish I had chance to 'leave out' food with my boys lol. They do really hoover it up. It can take a while to judge what they need to eat, and it will result in some food wastage at first, basically if they eat it all as soon as it gets put down, then i would give more. If they eat all that in one go, I would give them some more lol. Its when they walk away from a bowl full I think 'okay theyre full' and then take note of if they come back. As I said above its really not a case of it goes off within minutes of being out

All I have said so far is absolutely fine for kittens of 4 months. I believe mine were on an adult diet of raw and dry (which I have since changed) from 9 weeks old.

Re: Kitten food

That's very helpful thanks, so it's basically just feed til they are full? Guess it's just trial and error.

Looking at that thread you mentioned..I take it it doesn't matter if food has offal in it? I see Hobbs has said the animonda carny has quite a bit of offal in it?

Re: Kitten food

No it doesnt matter I dont think (and it might actually be necessary for various minerals etc...) but some foods do not contain enough of either one, which is why I personally feed from a few brands, to make sure that any deficiencies in one are covered by another

Ah here we go from Hobbs thread:

quote]At the most basic:
~ the food contains an overall high "meat" (meat here means meat + offal) content (high > 70%)
~ the food contains more meat (ie. muscle meat inc heart) than offal (kidney, lung, liver etc). Ideally, the ratio imo should be around 70/30[/quote]

As Purely havent actually disclosed how much is meat and how much is offal, I would feed it in isolation in case it was lacking in any aspect.
