Unhappy Baloo and his funny tummy

Hey Folks,

I'm posting today because this is my last step before calling the vet - so any help will be gladly recieved!

Niko and Baloo, my little fella's are nearing 5 months of age now. They are both happy little chappies, however Baloo has a tummy problem that i'm unsure how to deal with.

Regardless of what we feed him, he has the runs :|

Now I thought maybe it was his food, so I put him on Whiskers Kitten food (gradually) and although he loves it - he digestive system isn't so keen. I also tried gradually introducing biscuits, which once again seemed like a winner until they came out the other end.

As I said, he has been like this since we have had him - the only plus side was that he was only pooping once/twice a day and taking in lots of water so I kow he wasn't dehydrating. But today he has been 3-4 times already, and because of it being runny, he gets distressed because he has a tendancy to get some on his paws when he is trying to cover it.

Can anyone offer any advice before I take him to the vet?

Btw - both kitties are indoor cats and are wormed on a regular basis

Thanks for reading!!

Re: Baloo and his funny tummy

Have you tried feeding him just boiled chicken for a couple of meals to see if that firms him up? If not then a trip to the vets is definitely in order. I'm assuming Niko's poos are fine?

I have tried giving him boiled chicken for a few days, but as I said, nothing seems to settle him!!

Niko is perfectly fine, his issue is more about getting comfy in the litter tray but that is a question for another day

I think I will call the vet tonight but just wanted everyone else's views first!!

Re: Baloo and his funny tummy

If boiled chicken had no effect whatsoever then it is very unlikely the cause is dietary (unless he's one of the rare ones with an intolerance to chicken). You could try him solely on a different protein source such as boiled fish or duck for a few days to be absolutely certain but IMO a vet trip is definitely going to be the best bet.

How long have you had him and I'm assuming he's perfectly well in every other way?

How long has it been going on and has he been seen by vet, as there are so many things that could be causing but seeing a Vet would be the first thing before going down allergy/sensitivity routes.

Re: Baloo and his funny tummy

Hi

I am having exactly the same problem with my 10 week old kitten at the moment. She has had diarrheoa for the last week since we got her and was also being sick on two days.
She went to the vet and they think its a tummy bug and have given her antoibiotics. She has only just started the course but it seems to be having an effect.
Like somebody else said, boiled chicken should cure anything that is dietary so I would think its possibly an infection or bug..
Good luck getting it sorted, I know what you're going through!

Re: Baloo and his funny tummy

Thanks ejrogers! At least I know that Baloo is not alone on this one

Greyhare - Since we have had him (8 Weeks old) he has had a tempremental tummy, and his poop would be a mixture of hard and soft stools, but since Monday night he has been just having the runs. He hasn't eaten anything out of the ordinary and seems fine within himself though.

I'll have to call in at the vets tonight - I'm getting really worried about him now. He had about 6 poos yesterday and has alrady had a huge one this morning.

Luckily, he is taking in lots of water, and we are giving him chicken for the next few days.

I just hope its nothing serious

Re: Baloo and his funny tummy

Hi,

Our kitten Hunter had a bit of a funny tummy and it was worse when he was on dry food only. We've now moved to wet and it is much better even though you tend to hear that dry food sorts out a runny tum.

Just a thought.

Good luck.

Caroline

In that case I really think he needs to see a vet asap to try and get it sorted out.

Ditto. Vets asap.

Dehydration can set in really quickly, even when kitty is drinking alot.
