AIHA & boosters

Hey all,

Those who know, my Tom has AIHA or IMHA which is an autoimmune disease that affects his blood.

He is stable at the moment with a pcv of 18. (still low but better than the 9 it was this time last year!)

The thing is that tomorrow against my reservations, I am taking him in to have his jabs. As he missed his boosters because of being poorly, he has to have the lot done again.

The jabs could save his life if he gets flu, and is protected against the nasty things, but it could just as easily take his life if he has a reaction to them.

I just dont know what to do for the best.

Anyone help or offer advice? What should I look out for if he has a reaction?

He is also on 15mg of prednidale a day

I was in the same situation with one of my dogs, she has auto immune thyroditis, instead of vaccinating I titre tested, which is a blood test to check for antibodies to the various diseases, if the levels are ok then boosters are not required. I also had a chat to a specialist in auto immune, immune mediated diseases as well I was advised if you had an animal with auto immune dissease and vaccinated the risks of further problems and auto immune diseases was increased.

I have found this that might help you make your mind up or certainly give you more information anyway. Hope it might help.

Re: AIHA & boosters

How old is Tom?

Vaccination is only supposed to be carried out on 'healthy' animals and with his IMHA this isn't the case, I'm afraid.

Obviously speak to your vet but I wouldn't under these circumstances.

Re: AIHA & boosters

He has just turned 5, but the disease has taken its toll. To look at him, you would think he was double that age.

I think the vets are keen to vacinated as if he does get flu or fiv, with his comprimised system, it could mean a death sentance.

I would keep him as an indoor cat, but the last time i did that, he was so determined to get out he stripped the curtains and attacked the door seal! Plus he refused to use a litter tray and left a nice pressie on my bed!!

Thanks for the link, I will check it out
