Fat cat, diets and food

Roxy's gotten abit tubby so I need to do something about it now!

She's currently eating a mix of Acana and Burns (I was given the burns by a friend as she knows mine like anything "fishy" and hers didnt lol). I can swip and swap their food with no issues with their tums so changing food wont be an issue.

I'm starting to think its the Acana thats caused the weight gain, as she wasnt tubby before I started feeding it (I cant think how long they've been on it, but we're just coming to the end of a 7kg bag so I think its been a while lol).

Unfortunately I have to have food down 24/7 or Zara panics and makes her self sick and gets into a right state so I'm not sure exactly how much they've been eating (Zaras not tubby though), but now i'm putting Roxy on a diet I'll have to find a way around that.

In the mean time what dry food can you reccomend that's low in protein/fat? She's an indoor cat, she's fairly active but I think she's starting o grow up and calm down now lol

thanks in advance

Re: Fat cat, diets and food

Is there any way you would be able to move to wet food or even substitute one dry meal for a wet meal?

I had been feeding RC Fit 32 and Oscar was a tubby boy despite not being a big eater. Since going back to wet food 2 months ago, he has gotten his nice waistline back and lost his hanging belly.

Another option could be to try soaking the dry food in warm water to swell it up in size which means the cats eat less of it.

I would be looking at a high meat wet food diet. The fillers in dry are most likely to be causing a weight gain than protein. You will also find that she may begin to self regulate as the food fills her up more.

Agree with wet recommendations. Many people find that by switching over to a higher meat content food that weight loss occurs naturally. Dry diets do tend to lead to weight gain in cats, I'm afraid.

Re: Fat cat, diets and food

I forget to say that she currently has half a pouch of Gourmet cat food everday, I'm currently working on getting her to eat more of it and a different better brand, but it's taken us over a year to get this far so I'm not expecting that to be easy lol.

Re: Fat cat, diets and food

If you need to feed dry food then I would suggest RC light 40. My older cat was getting tubby and I put her on this and she has lost a nice amount of weight slowly.

I know people may not suggest this food being dry and being RC but I am just going on what I have found works for my cat (who is weird and needs to stay on RC food as anything else sets off her idiopathic cysitis don't know why?!!?)
