What should I feed my Bengals?

Hi folks. I just purchased a couple of cute little bengals (pics coming soon!) from a good breeder. Once they are a few months old they will be with me

This is the first time I have had cats and I'm struggling to figure out what to feed them...

My concerns with a handful of the 'good' ones:

I saw Orijen and Arcana, they look great.
However : so many people say to use wet food... but I am having trouble finding a wet food with quality similar to Orijen/Arcana.

Animonda looks good meat rating.. but it's all beef and largely offal. I don't see many cats killing cows in the wild? Also 10% carbs is quite high. Same with Grau.
Applaws looks great but has not enough fat/oils.
Nature's menu looks ok but lower meat content than the others, and questionable carb ratings?
Lily's kitchen has nice stats but horrible price and only 65% meat.
Purely 90% seems to be the only one I can't find a fault with.

Here is an excel table of my findings;
The right most columns show what nutrition a cat would get from eating a daily 'serving'.

Any comments or advice?

Re: What should I feed my Bengals?

I kind of get what you're saying about Animonda and Grau (although Grau now do a grain free variety available on zooplus) however either of these foods would still be better than feeding Orijen or Acana.

Yes they are the best dried foods but that in itself doesn't make them THE best food to feed your kitties, because they still do not have enough moisture in them.

If you are willing to order your food from Germany and pay for postage then your options would be a lot better. There is no one perfect food though so it's a good idea to rotate a few different brands to prevent boredom and make up for any deficiencies. IMO some of the better foods to look at would be PetNatur, GranataPet, Pfotenliebe, Macs and Tigercat

My info & comparisons above are compiled from Hobbs' thread. I already thanked her for it ^_^

Thanks x

dom85 - Yeah, I'm alright with ordering from abroad and I can actually speak decent german. I'll look into it. I like the look of purely 90% from pets at home, but they only do 2 flavors.

Re: What should I feed my Bengals?

I think before you decide upon one brand like Purely, you need to make sure they'll eat it. Largely what you feed is not what you want them to eat, but what they will actually eat.

Purely haven't actually disclosed how much meat and offal goes in, so thats certainly a fault.

Dry food is simply not good enough for a cat as a sole diet. You would be better feeding whiskas wet than all dry. It just doesnt compare with regards to the moisture content. Yes Orijen and Acana are the best dry foods, but, its best of a bad bunch...

Feeding cats for beginners (and more seasoned cat owners alike)

the second post makes for good reading regarding your issue.

As mentioned above, you can get some really good wet foods from Germany if you have issues with the ranges on Zooplus.

I have to admit I haven't looked at everything in detail but you seem to have your carb percentages wrong. I work Grau out at 1.6%(7.6% dma) and Animonda Carny at 1.9% (9% dma) not sure if that changes your mind at all

And I get neither of your carb values lol

Fadeaway, a tip though. In order to compare wet and dry food (or indeed compare any food with another) you need to convert both to a dry matter analysis which takes the differing moisture content out of the equation.

Well i'm confused now then, using the analysis on your A-Z for Grau; Protein is 10.5%, fat 5.5%, fibre 0.2%, Ash 2.2%, moisture 79%, minerals 1.037%, leaving carbs at 1.563%. Are you assuming the minerals form part of the Ash content? Have to admit I didn't look at the label just used your figures
