Best dry food for BSH?

Hi there,

Leo my 4 year old british short hair has 2 wet meals a day and 1 dry. At the moment, he has Orijen (which he loves!!) but I think the pieces are just too small!! He basically inhales them, haha!

I would like something that he would chew more, being better for his teeth, gums etc, i've seen that Royal Canin do a BSH specific food with bigger pieces etc but I would like to keep the food to a high quality as Royal Canin don't seem the best for quality.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you

Re: Best dry food for BSH?

Hi, I don't think dry does a great deal for their teeth anyway tbh! Orijen is in my opinion, the best dry food. My Ragdoll and Persian both love Orijen, but I don't think either of them crunch it up!

Re: Best dry food for BSH?

If you look at Hobbs' dry food A-Z guide, Orijen is one of the best dry foods you can give your cat. I'd not worry about him 'inhaling' them unless you can tell from the poop that he isn't digesting them correctly.

Applaws is a good one too, but not brilliant for male cats due to the high Ash content. Mine is on Applaws at the minute but I'm toying with the idea of buying a 7kg bag of Orijen as it works out cheaper than buying the smaller bags of most foods.

Royal Canin has lots of unnecessary carbohydrates in it which cats don't need. If in doubt check out the A-Z guide and avoid dry foods with carbs (maize, rice etc) and look for a lowish ash content, below 9%.

Re: Best dry food for BSH?

Thanks for the replies guys!

I'm just worried about his oral health as he doesn't crunch them really. He does like a good raw chicken wing every now and again though which he really chews and chews

Here's a picture of the lovely Leo too!

Re: Best dry food for BSH?

Dry doesn't help teeth at all - it's a fallacy - it shatters when they crunch it and then they swallow - you are doing the right thing by giving him chicken wings - absolutely nothing better for massaging those gums and cleaning of plaque - keep it up!

Re: Best dry food for BSH?

I would need more pictures of the cat in question before I could offer any valid advice.
