Anaesthetic or not?

Yep it's Bo again!

She's been ill for 8 days now. She's lost her voice, reluctant to eat wet food but ok with dry, has a runny nose (though today it's dry).
We first went to the emergency vet last Sunday, she just wasn't right and quite lethargic (how expensive are they ) and he gave her an antibiotic shot, pain killer and anti inflamatory shot. Thought she'd got an abscess somewhere but couldn't see one?!?! Her temp was 39.1 and her lymph glands were up.
The next day we went to our normal vet and he just looked at her throat, said it was very red and angry looking and gave us some metacam drops. Didn't take her temp.
The drops have helped slightly and we went back on Saturday. Vet again said sore throat but looked slightly better. Gave her an antibiotic shot. Said that if she's no better by today then he'd consider giving her an anaesthetic to investigate further.

I've just got home from work, she's not interested in her food (but i've not been here to see what she's had and what Boris has had) and seems quite agitated to the point of hissing and kicking off for no apparent reason. Something is bothering her.

Now I will take her back because she's not getting back to her normal self but do you think she needs more time to get better or would you have an anaesthetic to have a good old root around?

Bo's my first cat and I just want to do right by her. I know anaesthetics have risks and I guess it's weighing up the risk of waiting a bit longer or not. This has stumped me.

Re: Anaesthetic or not?

Sorry to hear abou Bo. How old is she?

Did the vets have any other suggestions apart from commenting on her sore throat and possible abscess? I'm wondering what they were hoping to investigate when they mentioned about the anaesthetic. Endoscopy?

Certainly sounds as if the antibiotics haven't worked and poor thing appears to still be in pain for whatever reason. I would have expected a better response after this time and her throat would have cleared up by now. I would ask about trying a different one before anything more invasive. Of course it may be something else entirely ( abscess which generally needs a stronger course ) which is producing the symptoms and not the apparent sore throat. Difficult to tell. Interesting that with a sore throat she prefers dry food to wet, though.

However, I would ask the vet to give a good physical examination. Maybe this can pinpoint the location of the evident infection. Bloodwork as well.

Good luck with vet visit!

Re: Anaesthetic or not?

Thank you!

No other suggestions from vets.
She 2 1/2.

We're going back this afternoon, she's not eating and is actually hissing at the food, poor baby

Not being fobbed off today, I want the vet to actually find out for sure what is wrong with her. It's not fair on her.

Re: Anaesthetic or not?

I agree and when it's interfering with her eating then it's doubly important! Have you had a look in her mouth? Sounds as if the infection has spread.

I hope you get to see a different vet.

Re: Anaesthetic or not?

No it's the same vet
But i'm taking reinforcements lol!
She's not letting me look today and I don't want to stress her out any more than is needed.
If I don't get any answers today or they dont admit her then we're going to another vets for a second opinion.

Re: Anaesthetic or not?

We have a bad infection and a smelly throat plus a slightly inflammed gum at the back.
Came away with antibiotics and metacam.
Fingers crossed this does the trick.

Yes, hopefully it will clear up now. Poor little thing. Different antibiotics, I hope?
