Spot on wormers

I HATE giving my cats tablets, it's stressful for everyone involved, so looked around online for spot on wormers and found Profender, was happy as it treats all types of worms too, but then saw you need a prescription to buy it... does anyone know if a vet will write me a prescription without seeing the cats? I have 2 cats and 2 kittens and don't want to drag them all to the vet if possible.

Or does anyone know of a spot on wormer that treats all types of worms that doesn't need a prescription?

Re: Spot on wormers

It is very unlikely that a vet would give a prescription without seeing the cats. In fact, my vet HAD seen my cat but, because they forgot to weigh him, they wouldn't give me the flee spot-on (with added wormer) that I wanted until I took him back and had him weighed. This is because there were different ones for different sized cats.

I would rather go through the inconvenience of taking my cats to the vet and getting the correct dose & treatment than run the risk of giving my cats the wrong dose of anything.

When it comes to my cats, I won't take any risks.
GreyHare and buffie like this.

Although Profender is a prescription item there are different levels of such things most vets will sell it over the counter as long as your cat is registered with them. If you have two cats and two kittens at least one of them will have seen the vet within the last 6-12 months so you'll be able to walk in and ask for it.

Well obviously neither will I, but Profender comes in small, medium and large cat, and I know how much my cats weigh.. I don't see how its any different to buying Drontal etc really

Re: Spot on wormers

its best to ask your vet as to which is the best one, but i would say a spot on is a good idea as it is a lot less stressful on the cat.

There is one similar to frontline, but does worming also with it, but I can't remember it's name. I read it few days ago.

Edit: Found it, it was called Advocate apparently it is very good does most worm types except tape worm I think and I think it is purchaseable with a prescription, but may not be.

It isn't any different and if you look at the detailed dosages on Noah you'll see the range for each size is huge -
Small - 0.5 to 2.5kg
Medium - 2.5 to 5kg
Large - 5 to 8kg

The actual required minimum dose is 0.14ml per 1kg body weight. Considering the small cat pipette contains 0.35ml and it's licensed for a body weight of half a kilo I'd say there's a fair safety margin

Yeah that's what I was thinking Phoned the vet, they will only write a prescription for it if I take them in, so I'm gonna be paying upwards of £35 for something that only costs £2.80!
