Fibre deficiency and raw diet question

My cat seems to suffer from fibre deficiency when he is fed a pure raw diet. Which in affect leads him to become constipated.

I fed him some oatbran cereal with his wet food and he has had 3 huge poops in one day and he seems lighter and more active since.

Now i hate the idea of feeding oatbran because it is a cereal. How else can i deal with this issue and how often should i be treating him?(vets told me to feed a high fibre pet food they have in stock *rolls eyes* i would rather feed raw)

I was thinking the oatbran twice a week, till i can find a better alternative.

Help!

Irritable Bowel Syndrome in Cats | petMD

Cat was diagnosed with Ibs and needs a high fibre diet.

Which explains all symtoms, diarrhea, constipation and vomiting..

Since treating with fibre he is much better.

Was thinking of feeding pumpkin (baby food) But i cannot find one or any tinned or fresh (out of season) So was thinking, would butternut squash be good?

Re: Fibre deficiency and raw diet question

I certainly wouldn't feed him oatbran on a regular basis! I'm actually surprised he ate it mixed in with the food. Cat's cannot digest grains and you could cause probems in the digestive tract by inducing an inflammatory response!

Better to add water to his wet food and see if this helps. Increasing his activity level is another way to prevent constipation. Best to find a solution that doesn't involved him actually getting constipated in the first place.

I'm fairly certain that squash is basically the same as pumpkin. You could also use psyllium husks. Are you sure that its the lack of fibre causing the constipation? Are you feeding an adequate amount of fat?

Is this the same cat we're talking about? Who diagnosed IBS? This is rare in cats, much more likely to be IBD-Inflammatory Bowel Disease which can only be definitively diagnosed via a biopsy. Otherwise symptoms are more likely down to food intolerance or sensitivity which applies in the majority of cases.

Re: Fibre deficiency and raw diet question

If they're constipated then they have too much bone in their diet. 10% is the maximum, I've read around and apparently 7% is recommended.

Some sites have recipes where they add psyllium husks for fibre. Making Cat Food by Lisa A. Pierson, DVM :: homemade cat food, cat food recipes

Re: Fibre deficiency and raw diet question

I add a tablespoon full of water to his food at every meal as it is.If not more.

The fibre difficiency is causing his constipation. So thats why i need to increase the fibre in his diet.

So what foods are high in fibre suitable for a cat to be fed on a regular basis?

And he was constantly getting constipated UNTILL he was given a high fibre cereal and he basicly exploaded. Nice firm stools. About 3 large poops in under 24 hours and he is full of energy this morning.

He is being fed DARF minces. With an extra chicken wing a week thrown in (i thought this was the problem so cut it out but it carried on)

Also feed him a small amount of liver a week and heart everyday. Supplement with 250mg of taurine per day and a high fish oil 3 days a week (a drop 3 times a week)

Re: Fibre deficiency and raw diet question

My other cat is fed iams and smilla atm (will be fed james wellbeloved soon)

Thought it was a reaction to the food he was eating so i put him on raw and he didnt improove. The vet says it is Irritable bowl syndrome and should have his fibre increased. But he wanted me to put him on their food which is higher in fibre *costs a massive amount*

And i would rather feed raw

Re: Fibre deficiency and raw diet question

Sure you didn't self-diagnose the IBS?

When you buy premade pumpkin mash (baby food) make sure it doesn't contain any onion.

How's that possible, you haven't been feeding DAF for more than a week surely? In fact it was only last week you said you had spoken to Hailey about a delivery ...

You do know that cats not pooping for up to 3 days is normal on a raw diet don't you?
