Re: Kitten underdeveloped, please read our story and help!

Firstly, since this little kitten appears to have come on in leaps and bounds since you've had her, I think you should be commended for the very obvious care and attention you're giving her. So well done to you and your girlfriend. She's very lucky to have you!

It's certainly clear to me regardless of her poor start in life, she's got a very strong will to live! Always a good sign! I think you'll just have to accept she'll develop at her own rate and eventually she'll catch up albeit slower than her peers. Ruling out any congenital medical problems I believe this is how it will be. If it helps what appeared to be the 'runt' of a litter we had once lived well into her teens.I'm glad to hear she's having regular check-ups with vet as well! Agree with Aurelia, I too would like to rule out worms!

Best of luck with her and keep us posted!

Hi, firstly, good work with your kitten and well done for reporting the monster who bred her

I have a stunted growth/small cat, who when we got her was 5mths old, but the vet thought she was somewhere around 10 weeks. She really was 5mths old, just tiny. She's 14 months now and, though small (looks about 6 months) is a robust healthy little thing, the only poorly thing about her is the occasional upset tummy. But I think this is just because shes a cheeky greedy minx and eats things she shouldn't, turned my back for a second tonight and she had her head in a bag of wotsits Hadnt eaten any though, just licked one.

Carry on with what you're doing (with the kitten milk too) and keep in touch with your vet, they should monitor her weight and development. As someone already said, there could be some problems but there is also a chance she could be ok

Re: Kitten underdeveloped, please read our story and help!

Hey guys, just thought i would update you on how things are going. We doubled suzies weight in the first week or so and she showed signs of being able to see slightly and getting more playful and all the things you would expect from a young kitten. she had been eating very well, but then in this last week she has slowly been losing weight.

We took her to the vets and he said it will be worms and gave us some Panacur worming stuff and told us a certain doseage per day for five days. The first two of these days her weight was steady and she ate loads. But since then and now (4th day) she has lost her appatite and lost even more weight, alsomst to the point of when we first got her. (still no sign of worms in her poop)

It really is horrible at the moment as she usually wolfs down her food and syringed drink no problem. Maybe she has lost her appatite due to the medication? She seems less bothered to do anything that before the med. I read somewhere on a website(s) that some kittens may have had a large infestation and all the worms dying at the same time can block the cats intestines or the normal injestion mechanism?

Has anyone had a problem like this before? Have you used panacur for worms before? How long was it before seeing results? Did you notice side effects?

Various websites say stuff about it but there is conflicts of ideas so i thought id ask you kind people who have experience of kittens. Its her last treatment tomorrow Sat 20th and then if she dosent improve im going to take her back to the vets on Mon with stool samples from previous three days to check for anything else that could be effecting her.

Thanks!

As she is so young and small, can you take her to the vets over the weekend? I would get her checked out sooner rather than later, especially given her history.

They can go downhill so quickly when they are small.

My vet is open 7 days. week which is a blessing if I have an emergency

You are doing a great job, but I would be very concerned that she's lost so much weight. Can you get to to a vet tomorrow - if not your regular vet, another one? A lot of vets are open on Saturdays, and this is urgent. Sickly kittens can go down very fast. Do keep us posted. x

Re: Kitten underdeveloped, please read our story and help!

we have two kittens both panacur wormed no signs of worms either but my vet told me to worm for 3 days and i now know i need to repete this every two wks (not sure for how long?)
simular situation kittens not in a great way but have improved vastly since we have had them one of them has had loose stools since the panacur which doesnt seem to be improving much althou some days better than others but he is definatly a very happy kitty (also on whiskers and whiskers milk but looking around to change that), due to go back to the vets in a week and a half. just wondered if we should have seen worms in their doo's too? im actually quiet worried about this as i have kids and have read the shocking things that can effect them from cat doings and round worms! going to watch this thread with interest, sounds like you are doing a good job with your little one hope that she picks up again soon with the weight gain.

So what did the vet say? I also suspect that the wormer-they are chemicals after all may have inflamed her intestines slightly. And yes, you can have cases where they stop eating owing to a large infestation. Constipation can also be a factor when they're off their food.
