Re: Cat with thyroid

Gosh, trouble has got notched up a little from trouble to double to serious!

Re your little mite may just be that his meds need adjusting a little so good job that you are booked in for more bloods soon. If you are worried you could always try to move the appointment forward.

Odd thing is he doesn't seem to want to go in there if I put a cushion in.

Re: Cat with thyroid

Don't know anything about your original question but just wanted to say how cute he is... Oh and cats seem to love uncomfortable sleeping places! Ours enjoy sleeping on hard chairs rather than soft chairs, in cardboard boxes rather than cat beds, on windowsills instead of a blanket... strange things!

Re: Cat with thyroid

Yes, same here Bonnie. Particularly Lila seems to have a penchant for sleeping on hard surfaces. My boys on the other hand are complete softies.

Re: Cat with thyroid

Hi ST (are you now a saint.....????? )

Has your lad had thyroid problems before or is this the first?

My old Sluggie first had trouble when he was 13 and had the damaged part of the thyroid removed. He did great for the next 4 years without any meds but then the other half started to fail. We struggled to stabilise him the 2nd time around... He would go great guns for a couple of weeks and then his count would go too low, so the meds would get changed and the count would go too high again.....and on it went, round and round......

Since joining PF I have realised that my vet at that time was not very good because he had me giving tabs every other day which I now know is not at all effective. My understanding is that the meds must be given on a steady regular basis. It has been said here about splitting the tablet so that the cat still gets a daily dose but of a lesser amount even though most vets will not agree with this and don't think the tablets should be broken up.

I'll have a mooch and see if I can find the old threads with this info on as I don't want to risk giving you duff info.

Found it........

When do you say enough?

Read Ianthi's post at 4.55pm.

Give your gorgeous boy a big hug from us at Moggy Towers.

!. That was actually my first choice - but PF wouldn't accept it for some reason: D

2. Yep! this is the first time - and the reading was 105 (or something like) he is on 2 x 2.5mg of the medication per day, is already appearing to be more settled and finally have noticed a slight increase in his size. We are at the vets a week on Monday for futher bloods - shall know then whether to increase of decrease his meds

Thanks for the reply!

If you are a bit concerned, you could maybe consider weighing him each day and logging it or whipping a tape measure around his girth to see how his weight gain is doing. That way you will see quite quickly if he is going backwards and if you need to bring your appt forward. With hindsight, I wish I had trusted my gut feeling & brought Sluggies appt forward when I was sure the meds weren't working....
