Weird Smilla tuna texture?

The "Bad Grau" thread got me wondering about the Smilla tuna tins I had recently. The texture was really odd, I haven't had the plain tuna ones in ages so couldn't remember what it was like before, but it was really strange, all crumbly and bitty, hard to describe without seeing it! very dry, and just seemed to crumble out of the tin in tiny pieces!

Anyone else notice? It smelt fine but my cats weren't keen.

Yeah I had some tuna ones recently and it just all fell to pieces. Never had the plain tuna before so thought it was normal. My 2 really weren't impressed with it either.

I can't remember if it was like that last time or not, but I don't think it's meant to be like that?

Re: Weird Smilla tuna texture?

Actually, by the sounds of it that is normal. I've had this food a few times and its always been quite dry and crumbly - nothing like the tins of tuna you buy for people. My boys don't mind it too much though.

Re: Weird Smilla tuna texture?

Oh ok, maybe it's normal, I normally get tuna and sardine, or tuna and chicken, so wasn't sure!

Re: Weird Smilla tuna texture?

Yeah, the tuna-and-something-else flavours do tend to be stodgier / wetter, more like normal tinned food. The plain tuna is definately drier - mine usually has liquid on top as if its separated a bit. I usually stir a tiny bit of water in myself to moisten it up a bit..

Still haven't found anything as weird as Terra Felis fish though - that stuff is bizarre, like a sort of foam / mousse.

Re: Weird Smilla tuna texture?

Never tried that but have heard it's proper dodge! While on the subject, I just opened a carton of bozita turkey pate and it's definitely different to normal, more like chunks of meat that have been pressed together rather than a blended pate!

Re: Weird Smilla tuna texture?

Now that does sound dodgy....
How does it smell? I usually go by smell rather than texture... obviously wet cat food never smells great, but I think you can usually tell if its off!

Re: Weird Smilla tuna texture?

It doesn't smell off, or horrible, but I do think it smells stronger...cats ate it happily, and usually I use them to judge if the food is off!

Re: Weird Smilla tuna texture?

The plain Smilla Tuna is definitely weird in its appearance and texture. If I put it down, straight out of the tin, my lot won't touch it. As soon as I mix in a big splash of water they wolf it down.

However, I have found that all of the better foods - Smilla, Animonda & Bozita - need extra fluid mixed in to make them easier for the cats to eat because they are such better quality, with less water, and are more dense. I sussed this out in the early days when I couldn't figure out why they weren't so keen on the food and that, after eating, they were emptying their water bowl. The water bowl barely gets touched now.
