How long can you keep dry cat food for once it is open?

I am having trouble obtaining a 2kg size of Royal Canin dry kitten food. PAH don't seem to have this particular one which I am looking for and they say they cannot order it for me. PAH do the 4kg size online but I am not sure if this size is going to be far too big.

Once the bag of Royal Canin has been opened, how long can you keep it for?

I know this is not the same, but when we open a packet of biscuits, it is not ok to keep them open for 6 weeks - but what is the length of time to safely keep cat biscuits?

Also, if the kitten doesn't eat all of the biscuits from its dish, how long before you throw them away and put a fresh lot down?

Hi Scarlett

I decant my cat biscuits into a couple of these. meant for keeping cornflakes and stuff fresh:

Addis Sealtight Food Storage Box 2.5ltr | Food Boxes | | Plastic Food Storage from Wilkinson Plus

They don't hang around for long in the bowl, but I probably wouldn't leave them out longer than about 24 hours.

We've bought a tupperware tub from Asda ... the kind you might normally use to store Cereal in. It has a scoop with it and a lid that you can open / close easily.

When we open a big bag of dry, we put most of it in the tub and it seems to keep for ages. We then seal whats left in the bag by properly folding it down and using masking tape.

I'm under the impression that Dry Food goes a bit 'soft' when it's gone off, so I think that's a way you can tell if it's ok.

Unhappy Re: How long can you keep dry cat food for once it is open?

Good question Scarlett20. I was wondering the same thing as I had purchased a 10kg bag for my two cats but now only have one! I keep the dry food in a tupperware container but I don't know how long it will keep in there. Hopefully someone with the knowledge will post an answer.
As for left-overs, if it has not been eaten within a couple of days it gets chucked. I never used to have this issue as Leo ate all Oscar's leavings but Oscar is far more fussy and only likes his kibble in large chunks!
