Re: Positive for Calici virus

Sorry about poor Benji, but you've caught it all quickly and assuming you can get his mouth under control, he should be okay. The last cold flare-up Misi had earlier this year didn't affect Simba in any way. He's vaccinated, but was still a young 'un. Just remember, My Misi's 18 and a half, so although almost certainly a carrier, is living a long and groovy life

Re: Positive for Calici virus

Regarding the Interferon - I believe this is what I'd do in your situation. Even if the success rate is only 20% the fact remains that it IS effective for some cats. Since success can only be determined by treatment and outcome essentially this is the only way you'll know whether or not it's effective for him. Currently he's got a 1/5 chance of it working compared to none at all if no treatment is instigated. However, I wouldn't be inclined to undergo any procedure that necessitated teeth extraction in order to guarantee optimun results, in a very young cat like Benji.

Obviously you'd have to take into consideration what your vets learns from Glasgow as well before making a decision.

Good luck with your decision and hope it all works out for you!

So sorry to hear about Benji but glad that he is still tucking into his grub!
It was lucky that you picked up on it so quickly. Please keep us posted on his progress.

Re: Positive for Calici virus

Thanks all for your input!

Even if it is only a 20% chance that the Interferon will work, I'm keen to try anyway. He may just be one of those 20%, but of not then at least I have tried. I'm also going to look in to L-lysine that somebody recommended.

I'm not too keen to yank his teeth out yet without trying other options first, both the vet and I agree that it is a last resort. He may not always be a carrier so I would be reluctant to pull his teeth out if there is a chance he could get better. He is such a darling little boy, he spent 4 hours last night charging around the flat like a looney, oblivious to the fact that he is supposed to be unwell. We are also going to use some L-lysine which the vet approved, and a gel that Misi recommended and vet confirmed for his gums

Will keep you all updated!
