Question Hairballs - when do you treat?

I'm a little confused about hairball remedies and when to actually use them.

Once every couple of weeks or so, Monty coughs about five times in a row as if he's trying to cough something up, but nothing comes up and then he goes back to his usual business. Does this mean he's trying to cough up a hairball and having trouble with it?

When are you actually meant to use hairball remedies? When your cat shows signs of "trying" to cough one up, or just as a regular thing?

Which are the best remedies to try? There are so many out there! And how often do you treat?

We did grow some cat grass but neither of them will touch it.

Would appreciate some guidance on this, as it's one of those things I don't really understand!

Re: Hairballs - when do you treat?

I have this Great Deals on Cat Pastes at Zooplus: Gimpet Malt-Soft Extra Paste for Bo as she gets hairballs quite a lot and finds grooming very stressful (my fault for not getting her used to it as a kitten).
She loves it. Can't get enough of it. We're not getting as many hairballs as we used to.
Boris gets groomed a couple times a week and not yet had a hairball.

Re: Hairballs - when do you treat?

Arnold started doing this too after he'd been home about a month or so.

I got some malt paste and gave that once a day for 3 days and groomed every day for those 3 days too. At first he wouldn't touch it so I smeared it on his paws which did the trick, now he really likes it and I give to him about once a week and he just licks it off my finger.

Re: Hairballs - when do you treat?

Thank you. Just ordered some malt paste on ZooPlus as I needed to do a cat litter order. Hopefully they'll like it!
