Cats and garlic...

I know garlic is one of the things not for cats! I have a quick question though. I recently ordered the darlings mince trial pack and in email correspondence I was told that their cheesy biscuits come highly recommendedfor cats. After finding out my cats go crazy for cheese dreamies recently I decided to try a pack.

Got it today and the first thing I notice is that they're called cheese and garlic biscuits...

Ingredients from the site:

Cheese biscuits
Wholewheat flour, cheddar cheese, full-fat milk, vegetable oil, egg, garlic powder

Will these be unsuitable?

Re: Cats and garlic...

Since cat are more susceptible than dogs ( though the same applies ) to the effects of garlic and to a greater extent onions, I would avoid anything that contains both in any form. Always best to err on the safe side with these things.

Just for others reading - onions etc can cause Heinz Body anaemia a dangerous, non-regenerative form.

Re: Cats and garlic...

I will tell them and ask to return them for a refund. If I was told 'cheese and garlic' in the email I never would have ordered them and they're not cheap! I should have looked before I bought but they knew I was buying for cats dear me!

Re: Cats and garlic...

Actually I'm quite surprised to see garlic as an ingredient though I'm fairly sure it's only a tiny quantity. This is what they'll probably tell you when you contact them!

Yes, the proportion is tiny.

Re: Cats and garlic...

They have two other treats with no garlic in. But they're not called 'and garlic' on the packet I imagine. Shall see what they say when i email.

What do you think Hobbs? Still a no go?

See what they say in the email. But I personally wouldn't baulk at a tiny proportion of garlic - I would be more concerned if it contained onion in even tiny proportions.

I would keep my hands off the other two, non-garlicy treats. One is a grain-bomb and for some reason I wouldn't feed my cats peanut butter but maybe they are missing out on the best thing ever because of my buying behaviour.

Vicky once gave me some venison treats that my cats loved - cannot remember now whether they were liver treats or dried venison meat. I would be cautious if they are liver treats.

Who knew that buying nice treats could be so complicated, eh?

Re: Cats and garlic...

Oh GM, as an aside, when you email them, could you ask whether they include liver in their cat minces? And why they include a supplement that contains calcium and magnesium when they feed a good proportion of food? Do they have analyses that show that they need to add those in?

Thank you!

Re: Cats and garlic...

I'll leave the advice to our resident gurus who know more than me, but I can recommend some treats!
Zooplus do some dried small fish wrapped in chicken or something similar, my boys LOVE them, they have eyes and all in them. Benji plays with his for a half hour before eating it, but they do take a while to eat anyway so their jaws get a good working out! I tend to get all of these from Doka at zooplus;
Great deals on pet snacks and food at zooplus: Dokas Chew Snack Chicken Breast with Fish (the fishes)
Dokas Snack Chicken Sandwich - Great deals at zooplus (chicken and fish sandwiches)
Dokas Snack Chicken & Cheese Sandwich - Great Selection at zooplus (chicken cheese sandwish)
Great deals on dog food and dog snacks at zooplus: Dokas Chew Snack (chew strips)

Now Benji has quite a senesitive tum but he can gladly eat these without getting the runs and they love their treats to bits!
Aurelia and Bonnie82 like this.

Ooh! I've seen those on Zooplus and thought they looked delicious (well, not necessarily for me, but you know...). I might get some, then. Looks like the sort of thing Misi would like, stomatitis-chops allowing
