Help! Not sure what I should do...

Hello,

Could do with some advice, Not really sure what I should so. My cat is 17ish and I've had her since I was 4 (although you wouldn't think so seeing her) and she's given me some cause for concern tonight.

She was ok when I got in from work, put their food out as i normally do and she didn't really pay much interest in it. she came in the garden with me for a bit and then about an hour ago she started running round like a headless chicken looking really distressed running from outside through the conservatory, to the otherside of the house and back and forth. I made sure all her litter trays were clear and accessible and that both outside doors were open, which they were as she looked like she needed the toilet.

She then had a wee outside and continued to run around the house looking distressed and like her tail was irritating her. She then mid running, had a little soft poo on the living room floor and gave out a big yelp and continued to run around outside and through the house.

She's now lying under my bed looking really flustered and wagging her tail around quite aggressively. My boyfriend says I should leave her to calm down but I'm worried that something is really wrong. Not sure if it's worth phoning the out of hours vet if things dont improve soon or wether I should leave her as my boyfriend has suggested and see if she calms down?

She's up to date with all flea and worming and has never had any major health issues. She's definetly not acting like her normal happy self. I've never gone through anything like this before as my parents dealt with the pet issues when we were living with them. I've now moved into my own house with Smudge. I've tried calling them for advice but they are on holiday with mobile switched off.

Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated (if you haven't noticed already I'm a bit of a worryer).

Sarah xx

Firstly do you think something has upset her in the garden. Another cat or a loud noise?
Has she calmed down in the last few minutes?
We can only guess and it could be a number of things.
She could have had tummy ache, hence the soft poo.
It is very warm and very close today.
Try and see if she will have any water.
Try and keep her relaxed in a dark rrom and check her in an hours time.
If she looks a little better then tomorrow only give her something light to eat like chicken and rice.
If she is not any calmer within the hour then i would give the vet a ring.

I hope she will feel better soon.
Keep us updated.
I have a 17 year old myself and she too is a worry sometimes

Re: Help! Not sure what I should do...

Thanks Jill3!! Put my mind at ease. With her age and her never really being ill before it did make me worry, But what you've said about the heat ect... makes sense.

I've checked on her and she's looking a bit more settled but still looks uncomfortable. I've left her under the bed with the lights off and all the windows and the fan on in the room. I've also moved the water fountain into the bedroom so she won't have to stray far.

Not sure if anythings upset her in the garden and she doesn't stray far. I'll keep an eye on her and see how she is in the morning.

If she seems to be in pain, you should definitely take her to see the vet. From the symptoms you described its kind of hard to tell, but remember that cats are just as prone to extremely painful conditions such as kidney and bladder stones as humans are.

Re: Help! Not sure what I should do...

I would definetely give the vet a ring. Our younger cat after using the bathroom, runs around the house like crazy and her tails gets really fluffy, but she's almost two, and has a lot of energy, plus I think she feels free after using the bathroom, not sure, but our vet said it was normal. Our older cat, who is 18 is quiet the opposite, she's older so slower. Her crazy running days are over, she isn't even that interested in jumping. The fact that she pooed on the on the living room floor and yelped meanwhile, sounds like she's having a bit of pain when she goes to the bathroom. She could be constipated and so it may hurt a bit to poo. The running around sounds like a cry for help, I would call the vets. Keep us updated.

Re: Help! Not sure what I should do...

Sorry I've not posted sooner. She woke me up at about 4am this morning wanting feeding, she ate a little bit and then went to sleep on the bottom of the bed. She seems much better this morning and was back to her normal self when I left for work.

Phoned the vets this morning and I'm taking her there this afternoon for a full check up. I'm a bit worried what happened last night may happen again if she tries to go to the toilet again. She hasn't been since last night.

Re: Help! Not sure what I should do...

Could be cystitis. Very distressing for the cat but less of an immediate worry with females as they aren't as prone to blockages as males. You are doing the right thing taking her to the vet.

Re: Help! Not sure what I should do...

My thought was, reading your post, that maybe a small nasty bug / leech has attached itself to her when she was out in the garden....... The running around was because she could feel it on her and the yelp when it bit/ latched onto her.....

I'm sure the vet will give her a good going over however.

Good luck.
