Re: Dry food and teeth

I gave up on the idea of dry food being better for teeth a long time ago. For a start it makes no sense to me, and I've known a few dogs and cats fed dry diets that still got bad teeth.

I use PlaqueOff, can't say for certain that it works but I've heard enough good things (most of the people I've spoken to who use it say it does help to prevent plaque, and although it won't remove existing plaque it does seem to slow / stop the progression).

I'm also a fan of raw - would love to get the boys onto a whole prey diet exclusively, but that's not an option at the moment. I found chicken wings were not too popular here, but day old chicks, mice and baby rats went down a treat. You can buy them frozen from reptile / exotic pet shops, or online.

Re: Dry food and teeth

Our oldest cat wll let us brush her teeth for a bit, but our youngest will not stand for it. We bought malt toothpaste, which is their favorite flavor for hairball treatment, once our youngest sees that toothbrush, we use the one that you place on your finger, she runs. Their both on a soft food and grain free hard food to nibble on. So since the brushing doesn't work with Bella, our youngest, we buy dental treats and use liquid tartar remover, which we place in both their water twice a week. Dental cleaning is ridiculously expensive, I think. When Bella was a kitten all her baby teeth fell out except for one, which got a little infected, so we had to get it pulled out and since she was going under anyways we got her teeth cleaned, the vet bill came to about $550. The cleaning part of the bill was about $350, pricey.

Re: Dry food and teeth

I'd been meaning to ask about how to keep Cookies teeth healthy ... some people have mentioned a product that you can add to their food / water - is there anywhere you can get this online? along with tooth brushes / cat toothpaste?

And can anyone particularly recommend any of these?

Re: Dry food and teeth

I used to brush Sooty's teeth 3-4 times weekly, I found using a baby toothbrush the easiest to maneuver and more gentle on their gums. The toothpaste for kitties is very yummy for them too!
