Advice needed

Our cat is a generally very healthy 13 year old with a huge appetite and lovely nature.
She is so not well, last weekend she started to wander around aimlessly, walking into things as if she's blind, but shes not.
She has no reactions, isnt eating, cant use the cat flap, has no energy and Ive no idea if shes had a wee even.
Shes normally out so doesnt use a litter tray and wouldnt use one now as she is.
She completely walks through her food, steps into her water and gets into corners she normally wouldnt go into, its as if she has no whiskers to tell her of the danger.
We took her to the vets last Wednesday who said all seemed well but wanted to check her blood pressure the next day at intervals.
Next day she was fine and was until a repeat of the same started Saturday gone.
We are booked to go away next Friday and have a cat visitor come in twice a day, Im so worried I dont know what to do for the best.
Has anyone experienced this with their cat, any advice appreciated.

Re: Advice needed

So she is like this intermittently or is it all the time? What did the vets say? From how you are describing it I can't believe they considered all appeared well. I would take her back to the vets ASAP and explain her symptoms have returned, I would expect them to be undertaking blood tests particularly glucose, thyroid etc. If you aren't already I would keep her in, that way you know she can't get herself in any trouble and you can monitor her condition / toileting etc.

Re: Advice needed

Thanks for the reply.
She wasnt herself for about 3 days, just got worse, when we took her to the vets she took her temp, heart rate, checked her eyes and I must say she didnt seem that bad when we were there and the next day she was fine.
Started with the same 2 days ago, she wouldnt use a litter tray, she doesnt know what her food/water bowl is or the wall in front of her!
She cant get out of the garden though, she cant jump onto the sofa never mind anywhere else.
Its so peculiar to watch and very distressing, she walks about for ages bumping into things.

Re: Advice needed

Did the vets actually say she wasn't blind because it sounds to me as if she is or was! Or is having a mini-stroke. What was the blood pressure result? Bloodtests?

I agree completely with Ali. You need to take her back straight away and insist the vets get to the bottom of this! I wouldn't waste a moment longer.

Re: Advice needed

We didnt take her back for the blood pressure tests as she was fine then, vet said it must have been a one off something, blood tests werent mentioned at that stage but I think thats whats needed now.
Vet said she wasnt blind, she does react to movement as if she can see, then bumps into anything thats in her path.
We did think maybe shes had a mini stroke, do they ever get over something like that?

Re: Advice needed

So blood pressure was never taken at all?

You really should have taken her back on the Wednesday to have the further tests. The vets would most likely have run some bloodtests as well. If confirmed and I suspect this is the most likely then it's easily treated with medication but left untreated can have devastating consequences like seizures strokes. In fact I take her NOW to the emergency vets. At least call them and take their advice.

Cats have a habit of *hiding* just how ill they are at the vets. I remember the much missed Beckett appearing to be at deaths door at home (which he was ultimately) but once at the vets he seemed as feisty/active as a healthy cat. He was sent home with antibiotics to treat a virus of some kind even tho' I knew it was far more serious than that.

It was only when I insisted he was kept there they finally saw the lethargy/obvious illness I was seeing at home, but by then it was too late, tests showed his kidneys had all but packed up after he'd been deliberately poisoned. He was only 18 months old and it was seemingly his youth and strength that had kept him going so long.

Here's hoping the vet can work some magic on your cat.

Ian

Re: Advice needed

I am so sad to have to say this but she died at 0435 this morning. We called out the emergency vet last night who said it was too late, her pupils were as big as saucers.
I feel so bad about not spotting signs earlier and letting her suffer, she walked about so much wearing her self out that she must have died of heart failure but we'll never know now.
She was 13, my other cat is 10 and keeps looking for her, she's lost!
Skye died in the kitchen on her own, how bad is that?
Our other cat Lucy died a year ago, she had a tumour on her mouth, cost a fortune in vets bills cos they werent insured.
I took out insurance on these 2 a week ago but too little too late, Im absolutedly gutted..............gotta go (
