Stings!!!

Looked for a thread on this, couldnt see one but sorry if there is!

My cat came home at 7.10am this morning running low to the ground and his eye was all closed up. He wouldnt let me anywhere near him which isnt like him. Anyway, he disappeared again and came back an hour later and I saw his face was puffy on one side. This has happened before, though it wasnt as puffy last time, and I can only assume he was stung as he always chases flies and wasps and bees etc etc!

I managed to grab him and had a look but couldnt see anything left in the skin, he doesnt like being manhandled and on my own I struggled to see much. I watched him for the next 20 minutes and he seemed ok, was playing with the other cat, eating and drinking fine, breathing fine. Seemed a little fed up but cannot blame him and he was not scratching it or licking it. After the 20 mins in his eye seemed to be more opened and he was quite alert and happy. Though i dropped water on him by accident (couple of drops mind you) so he was squinting at me accusingly for a while.

I had to go to work and have left him locked indoors today. Should I be worried? I work too far to check him at lunch, other half will be home at 4.30pm. Last time this happened he was ok and it went down after 12 hours. I assumed that as it had been left an hour and thats as bad as it got, he should be ok.

Would appreciate the advice but please dont make me panic as I cannot get anyone to check on him til 4.30!!!!

Re: Stings!!!

Your poor cat! I would phone the vets to put your mind at rest about this, at least then you will know if you need to worry.

Re: Stings!!!

Bee and wasp stings (if indeed that's what it is) can be very dangerous to cats. Some cats like humans can have a reaction to the sting, if he's been stung before then chances are he should be okay but if it were me I would rather make certain. Is there anybody that could go and check on him?

Re: Stings!!!

I cant give much advice about this current situation, but will say that most of my cats have had stings at one time or another and been similarly unaffected. Of course it is possible for some cats to have a much stronger adverse reaction ,and stings in the mouth or throat can be deadly.
PLEASE check with your vet how to deal with any future bites....I know that a small dose of Piriton ( 1/4 of a 4mg tablet) can safely be administered to cats in this situation, but obviously one would never medicate an animal without first at least calling the vet for advice.

Re: Stings!!!

There is noone to check on him

As I say, last time he was ok but it didnt look too puffy like it did this time, and he wasnt reacting badly, when i left he had had it for an hour and a half and was absolutely fine and beating up 'simple cat' in his usual enthusiastic fashion, otherwise i would never have even thought about leaving him.

Only an hour and a half til my other half gets home and ive told him that even if there seems nothing wrong, call the vet and ask if there is anything we should do.

Other half keeps telling me not to worry.

I just wish they would learn after the first time it happens!

Re: Stings!!!

Oh and I dont think he was stung internally, like in the mouth or throat, he was eating and drinking perfectly normally. I offered a treat to check and he gobbled it up and crunched it with no problems. I would image it got him on the outside of his cheek, thats where most of the swelling seemed to be and thats where it was last time too!

Got lavender in my back garden which the bees are enjoying, thats the most likely culprit. Credit to the bees, about two months ago, 'simple cat' brough a live bee home with usual proud look on his face. We wrestled it off him and it hadnt bothered to sting him at all.

Re: Stings!!!

Milo has been known to bring a live wasp/bee home inside his mouth.
Wings likes this.
