cat blindness - there is hope

I just wanted to let people know my experience with my cat's blindness. She is over 20 now, became deaf 2 years ago, sleeps and eats a lot. Over the past 2 years I've been told by my vet that she had cancer (turned out to be stools in the gut) and critical renal failure (probably true, but she has been like this for 2 happy years). She does eat a lot and doesn't put on weight. But then she went blind. That was awful, walking into doors etc. I read something about blood pressure/hypertension and took her to the Vet It was very high, she had displaced retinas, and she was given pills. Low and behold her eyesight returned. It's been a month now. So my message is check blood pressure. They always do on humans, why not cats? It has been a sort of miracle, so don't just assume that when your cat goes blind, that's it. It has been such a relief. When I checked the issue on web sites I didn't see anyone mentioning their experience as being positive.

Re: cat blindness - there is hope

Hi there and welcome!

I'm very glad to hear about your cat who luckily through your prompt intervention had her sight restored. It does sadden me to hear about cases where this didn't happen and the blindness couldn't be reversed months later.

I'm one of the people here who is always advocating regular blood pressure checks in older animals especially to prevent damage to further organs. Added to this we have a problem where a lot of vets do not even possess the equipment. I had to 'persuade' my local practice to buy it!

Since hyperthyroidism can be a cause of high blood pressure, I'm wondering if your vet tested for this? Her 'good' appetite and weight could easily point to this.
