New Kitten

Hi,

I have just had a blue persian kitten today, 8 weeks old. This is my first kitten in 12 years since last one passed away so bit out of practice!

Not sure if i'm being paranoid or not but had her at 12 today, shes gone to little tray fine, and ate about a quarter of a tin of kitten food on her own, but she's done nothing but sleep since she's been here, slept for two hours on me, then ate, now she's sleeping on sheepskin rug, not really wanting to walk around anywhere or investigate, just keeps walking to the rug and then rubbing her paws on it and then sleeping.

she also has a little pus around her eyes, and the prev owner told me she had a flea tablet this morning.

Do i need to be concerned? As i said, fully out of practice and can't remember how my previous cat was when she was a kitten in new home?

Thanks in advance

Lola x

Re: New Kitten

Where did you get her from from a start? No pedigree persian breeder would let an unvaccinated kitten go at 8 weeks. I hope you didnt pay too much as you could have bought anything

A flea tablet? Do you mean a worming tablet, maybe my ignorance but I havent heard of a flea tablet. *edit, googled them* Has he been treated for worms also?

Honestly 8 weeks is far too young to be away from its mother. Kittens should stay til at least 12 weeks.

is she sleepy, or is she lethargic. If she is lethargic she needs to go to the vets, as kittens this young can go downhill very fast. She also should not have pus around her eyes, cats can have runny eyes which is a bit red in colour, but not pus. She needs to go to the vet if its anything other than red.

Did you see the mother? Do you have the pedigree papers? Are you going to book in for vaccinations etc?
Misi, Merenwenrago and KittehNom like this.

Re: New Kitten

Lola this doesn't sound normal. I had my kitten from 7 weeks and although she was a bit nervous to start, she was very soon playing and sniffing around (within a couple of hours). The pussy eyes is worrying.

If she's no better tomorrow, I would find a 24 hours vets and give them a ring, they will give you advice over the phone at no cost.

Re: New Kitten

I agree. I've seen cats sleep like this in their own familiar environment after for eg being hospitalised at the vets which is stressful for any cat! My older cats also tends to sleep a lot but a young kitten in a new, unfamiliar environment, no I wouldn't have expected this at all!

Sleeping like this plus her eye problem point to infection and she needs to be seen by a vet! Let us know how you get on.

Re: New Kitten

Anytime you get a new cat or kitten you should take them to the vets to get a check up. Our second cat was a rescue, so we got her very young, she was only 7 weeks. For about two days she was very nervous, hid under the bed, only ate at night, but after that she was very playful, running around the house and getting into it with our other cat. I would worry about her eyes, sounds like an infection, maybe that's why she's sleeping so much. She definetely needs to see a vet for a physical check up.
