My boys are eating much less since their snip...

(As I type this watch three little maniacs jumping around chasing a fly, so health and fitness is ok...)

Well, since their snip and dental work a few of weeks ago (14th July to be precise) the boys have all been eating less and less. They were on "Antirobe" antibiotics for 10 days after the dental work to help damp down the gingivitis, every day they shared some white fish with their portions of antibiotics. They were eating OK at this point.

Now, for pretty much all of this week they have been eating much much less. Where they would polish off two tins of food for breakfast or dinner - max three a day between three! - now they have a few mouthfuls and then all wander off. I just put down half a tin for dinner and most is still there. They are also eating much less dry food looking at the feeding containers on the floor.

They had their first tinned tuna earlier this week in an attempt get get them eating, which did go quite quickly. The poo coming out the other end is as copious as ever, or so it seems.

Any ideas folks ? Is it the snip or the antibiotics being over ?

Leo has to go back to the vet on Thursday to have his vestigial teeth pulled, and if it continues I will seek advice them, but that is almost a week away. As I said at the top, they do seem themselves otherwise.

Thanks!

Re: My boys are eating much less since their snip...

Were they eating more than normal or just the usual while on Antirobe? The decrease in appetite which accompanied it's cessation would initially be suggestive of returning inflammation/tenderness which impacted on eating. Ruling this out and since they had no 'physical' problems with the tuna I'm more inclined to think they actually might just prefer fish now ( don't forget they had some daily with medication! ) to whatever you were feeding them before. I realise tuna is particularly appetising where cats are concerned but I wonder if they're appetite would improve if fed a fish flavoured food?

Of course it might also be the current batch of food that's a problem given that both? cats are involved.

Re: My boys are eating much less since their snip...

Thanks. All three are being the same. They didn't eat more per se after the dental treatment and as of last night and this morning they have picked up again. One whole tin (in two portions) each sitting, between three.

I think it might be they are at a small plateau in terms of growth esp. after the castration.

PS I got the original date wrong - they were "done" on the 14th July - two weeks and two days ago.

I've never noticed this post-op dip with mine ever so never occurred to me.

Glad to hear ( all three! ) are eating well again.

Someone pointed out that a loss of appetite is listed in the possible side effects of the antibiotics they got for their post-dental recovery. Hopefully they'll be back on track soon...
