female suddenly started spraying

our bubs has recently started spraying the house late at night.

it doesn't really smell unless you put your nose up to it, smells of urine.

We can't figure out if:
it is because she's stressed by the other cats (neeps and rhubs see her as a toy to chase, she doesn't help herself any tho! eejit);
if it's something to do with the fold that's recently moved to our neighbour hood (poor old soul, he's not in a good way and creeps in to eat our cat food), we're not sure if he's spraying when he's in or if it's just his smell in general that's getting to her (which doesn't seem likely as he comes in all hours); or
if she has a water infection.

i've bought some serene-um and have been putting that on her food each nite since weds, we have a feliway diffuser (which has never made any difference to her attitude) and she has recently lost the ability to go into next doors house (we assume she did something to annoy them and she's been banned) so she has no 'safe' house anymore.

Mr fold has been around for about the same time as she's lost her safe house, so wonder if all the stress is just got to a point for her.. she hasn't changed her attitude towards us.

she has gotten better at reacting to neeps and rhubs but still avoids going out the patio door unless it's wide open and they're not directly in her path.. now considering this is the miniture cat that beat the absolute CRAP out of the local ginger tom that is 3x her size and now runs away from her, and another massive black cat, and did not put up with any rubbish from oscar when we had him. So we're not entirely convinced that the other 2 have anything to do with it. they're not spraying that we know of. and she only seems (ie we've only seen her) to spray late at night around 12/1am.. husband stays up late gaming.

Is this something cats with water infections do? or is she trying to reassert her authority? and if so why the hell doesn't she just push the midget-fury switch again?

I will make an appointment for the vets next week, but i am hopeing the serene-um works first. we do try and compensate for her lack of safe house i have to mention, by locking her in our room, she stays up there for hours and picks the carpet to let us know she wants out. should also mention her and neeps share a bedroom and sleep 2 yards away from each other! so again not convinced it's 'stress' from her siblings.

any ideas?

Re: female suddenly started spraying

If she is spayed it is probably the fact that the new cat is coming into her house.

Is there no way you can stop that, by getting a microchip catflap etc. I do not think locking her in a room' is really a good idea to help her stress :S She needs to have her safe house back, so you need to find ways to stop the new cat coming inside.

Re: female suddenly started spraying

cats normally spray (unless unneutered) because they are stressed about something.

Re: female suddenly started spraying

when i say lock i meant i shut the door so the other cats can't get in. she loves it! she lets us know when she wants out, we obviously don't do it when we're not in, i don't want her shitting on the bed for a start.

'locking' her in means she gets hours of undisturbed peacetime where she doesn't have to check every noise in the fear that it's one of the others coming in the room, tho when she's in there she will tolerate them much more as long as they stay at least 2 feet away from her on the bed. but we think she prefers being shut in so she can completely relaxed.

yeah getting her safe house back would be nice, but as she's our cat and not next doors i can hardly go round and ask why they're not letting her in anymore, it's up to them if they let her in again or not.

we can't get a chip-flap, only rhubs is chipped and the flaps are expensive.. he'd break it in no time. he ran through a locked sturdy one we'd just bought, dismantling the inside cover and breaking the locking mechanism.. there's no way a chipped flap would survive him at 1/4 pelt let alone full on rhub-juggernaught, and if it did rhubs wouldn't! definately NOT an option.

she's never been that bothered by other cats coming in before, in fact she's slept threw various incursions by Mr Fold and looked very confused when we give her 'into trouble' for being such a useless guard cat. so it's weird she's bothering to react to him now and why him in particular, he runs a mile whenever he sees any other cat from the street, he's no threat. also the other cats in the street are regular food stealers.. the ginger was found late at night when we arrived home hiding on top of the cookerhood cos lucy wouldn't let him out of the house once he was in. she was fast asleep on the floor when we came in, his ears were just visible over the false top of the hood. Hilarious.. he still looks through the kitty window occasionally (cat flap) not for long though as the rhub-juggernaught soon ploughs through it and chases him up the street.

she's neutered, she's a rescue, i'll take her to the vets to be sure it's nothing untoward, but think it'll just be a case of making sure she gets regular lock ins to help her calm down.

what's also odd is that if it is stress, she's been far more stressed in the past and not done this.. she's actually getting used to rhubarb now and although neeps and rhubs do still chaser her they don't do it that much as they know she's boring and doesn't play. she's far more 'relaxed' than she was when rhubs was first introduced to the rest of the house and took up station at the catflap and didn't let anyone in or out. lmao.

saying all that, she IS a bloody odd cat.

on a side note, we found out why neeps isn't a good vets patient last nite... we knew she wasn't to be trifled with but bloody hell! tried to put a new collar on her (flea collar) and she went MENTAL! OH put his fencing gear on (the sport not the wooden garden divider) and we still had to give up due to the deathrolls and she got through his glove! lmao

we've just got to slip the loop in and the new collar will be secure.. then we just have to get the old one off! no wonder the vet said they would sedate her if they ever had to investigate anything with her again.. the cat that ate through her drip! deary me.
