Prize Choice for kittens?

I am getting 2 new Russian Blue kittens on friday afternoon, breeder says they have been fed on Prize Choice mince as are all his animals (Mau's,Shorthairs,Alsatian, etc).
Have spoken to the breeder and he says offal has also been included in their diets.
Havent had a kitten for 17 yrs (cat put to sleep 2 months ago due to renal failure, lasted 3 yrs after diagnosis though) so a hell of a lot has changed in the passing years.
Been reading up a lot on this forums + others and to be honest my head is in the shed a lil worrying about which diet, etc lol.
Prize Choice ok with offal or best to use Felini with it or try something else?
They have been fed Prize Choice from the start, breeder mentioned perhaps the odd biscuit here n there just as a back up in case me n wife go out when they are older so they can graze.
All help greatly appreciated

PS if any of you have a cat with renal failure and find they arent eating the food "royal canin renal beef" here is my top tip, shred a small piece of boiled chicken into the food and micro it for less than 15 secs just to make it appetising.
We struggled like hell when my cat was diagnosed and could see us putting her to sleep due to weight loss, the "add chicken" was a masterstroke and enabled us to enjoy another 3 yrs of quality life with our cat.
Hope this helps some of you

Re: Prize Choice for kittens?

Hello Deathsurge, welcome to the forum. A tad of a morbid username though, eh?

Re prize choice and kittens. Personally, I wouldn't. Not sure whether you have seen this thread on your travails through the forum: Prize Choice freeflow and normal minces.

But why tinker with a product when there are companies that provide products that are more balanced, such as Darlings, Natural Instinct and (even DAF minces - though always get in touch with the manufacturers and query their ratios etc).

Since they have already been weaned on to raw minces there might not be much of an issue of moving them on to minces from another company.

But don't use Felini Complete with the Prize choice minces as they contain bone. The FC requires just meat and some offal but no bones as there is enough calcium in the product to supply the calcium needs of cats.

Anyhow, those are my thoughts on the subject! Hope they help.

Re: Prize Choice for kittens?

Tnx for reply
Apologies for the name but it's my normal forum tag due to be a 44yr old MMO gamer who refuses to grow up lol.

I was going to order some Natural Instinct to be delivered for monday because I am not off work till then and they dont deliver on weekends.
Also they appear to have removed the cat product from their site.
I bought some Prize Choice just so that the kittens will have something to eat over the weekend that they know.
Should I order the Darlings starter pack? Do I have to add any supplements to that food or the Natural Instinct food?
Apologies for questions but I want to give these kittens the best possible start in life because myself and my wife will 100% always strive for the best of everything for out pets. Its knowing that our last cat had 17+ amazing yrs and a better life than some children get.
Finding all this a bit overwhelming tbh lol.Paranoid about what food to give now lol.
Is Bozita any good? Also any good dry food to give just as a grazing snack?
Tnx in advance

Re: Prize Choice for kittens?

Hey just ask away. Yes, I wondered whether there was a die-hard gamer lurker behind that name

I take it you saw that other thread about NI minces. Considering the recent run they have had on their minces they might have run out or are just updating the site.

Re delivery, I think you will have issues with most raw food deliveries, unless you pay more for a Saturday delivery if offered.

Darlings raw minces are worth a look. I like the ethics behind them - ie. free-range animals but that also means that you pay considerably more. According to Darlings they are "complete" - i.e. following approximately the right ratios but you will need to add taurine to the minces. The mincing process destroys that essential amino acid, so needs to be added back into the food. Incidentally, you don't need to do that with NI minces as their own tests have apparently shown that even after mincing their minces contain enough taurine to satisfy a cat's need.

I would also add some omega 3 into the minces, such as salmon oil or feed oily fish once a week or tbh I would do a bit of both!

Re Bozita, hmm, the pate tetrapaks I would class as good quality. Overall, pate food is better quality and also tends to be more nutritious than the stuff in jelly/gravy etc, which tends to be stretched with loads of filler (ie. the jelly/gravy).

Re dry food, personally, I would not offer any as a staple part of their diet. If you want to have some for an occasional snack (e.g. in a treat ball) than go for foods that are grain-free and high meat, such as Orijen and Acana. They offer small sample bags that should last you a while if you only offer small amounts now and again.

Re: Prize Choice for kittens?

Again many thanks for the prompt reply
Me and the wife are taking next week off to settle the "bears" into their new home hence the intention to order the NI food to be delivered while we are home.
I may also contact Darlings then to get the starter pack and see if the kittens like it.
If I can get the NI and the cats like it then I will try to stick to that, failing that will go for the pate option with the odd biscuit attack

Re: Prize Choice for kittens?

I'm sure the NI will be back (hopefully soon as I am due an order) They usually still leave the option up when out of stock, and just give you delivery dates after they get it in stock, so I assume they are changing something about it. They told myself and a few other members they are doing two new flavours (lamb and fish) so maybe its in the works

I have also just enquired about the Darlings starter pack, should be interesting i get way more excited about my cats food than my own....

Re: Prize Choice for kittens?

Just on a side note if you do manage to get a NI delivery with their apparent disappearing food, they don't deliver on Mondays

And welcome aboard, it's nice to see a few more MMO addicts around!

One thing to keep in mind with the NI minces, at least for now, is that they only offer one flavour - a mix of two proteins - chicken and beef. Now, a raw diet needs to be as varied as possible, with as many different protein sources as is sensibly possible as each meat has got its own strength and weaknesses.

Therefore IMO the NI mince isn't varied enough to be fed on its own long-term. But that is not an issue if you also go for Darlings minces, as well as some good quality wet food.

Remember though, with wet food, a similar mantra applies - try to rotate a few different brands that are of the same quality to prevent boredom but also to provide as balanced a diet as possible (no one brand is perfect).

And also don't forget that minces or wet food (or indeed dry food) don't do much for cat's dental health. So, you could start them on some small boney meals a few times a week and/or start brushing their teeth.

Not sure whether you have seen this but some of the info in here may help: Feeding cats for beginners (and more seasoned cat owners alike).
