Question about changing kitten food

Hi

I would like to change my kitten onto a better diet, after reading all the info on here, I can see there are better foods available for him. He is on 3 Whiskas Kitten pouches a day and a few biscuits on top for his teeth at the moment, but I have been supplementing once a week/twice a week with a raw chicken wing/sardines/tinned fish. I would like to get him onto what is BEST-even if it does work out a bit more expensive. I looked on zooplus but there are so many brands and types, I cant figure out which.

I did ask my vet when he had his last vacc and she said she feeds her cats Whiskas and my kitten had a lovely shiny coat and had gained lots of weight so to leave him be? If anyone could just name a brand to try first, because I am finding all the %ages and pros and cons really confusing in the sticky.

Thanks for your advice in advance

Re: Question about changing kitten food

firstly forget the bit about dry being good for tooth - that's a load of old tosh - they bite, it shatters and then they swallow, no massaging of the gums or cleaning of plaque at all- the chicken wings are the best for his teeth.

If you go to the supermarket - buy Hi-life
If you got to Pets@Home buy either Hi-life, Purely or Natures Menu
If you go on line go to Zooplus - buy Bozita.

That will start you off and then you can begin to look around others after.

Re: Question about changing kitten food

Personally, knowing what I know now, I would go for a selection of Animonda Carny (make sure it's the "complete" version) and Grau Gourmet in various different flavours, both available from ZooPlus, and use those to introduce the kitten to higher quality wet food. My kittens seem to eat most foods but they absolutely love Animonda and Grau.

That's just my opinion though and other good foods available from ZooPlus are Smilla and Bozita. Our kittens also LOVE Lily's Kitchen (we buy direct from http://www.lilyskitchen.co.uk/) though they don't get this all the time as it's quite expensive. It's a great food though.

Good luck with the change!

Mine are the same... little buggars have gone off Bozita! My boyfriend gave them one of my last few tins of Grau and they ate it and havent had any problems with poos so I dont know whether to keep them on that, as they demolish it and leave Bozita

Bozita pate is a good food to start on as Spid said, anything over 70% meat is good, and really above 90% is best (whiskas is 45% ish I think, for reference ) If you use Hobbs A-Z for percentages it will help you as all food will likely say min4% on the package as thats what is required but most are happy to declare that they put in much more and that is the info contained in Hobbs A-Z. if looking on zooplus.com, Animonda, grau, bozita (pate) and smilla are probably the best on there.

My boys love the Purely pots (scrummy yummy) from Pets At Home, but they are a funny texture (the boyf calls them meat cakes lol) and a lot of cats don't like the texture, mine are just greedy but they are fine with it.

Re: Question about changing kitten food

I used to feed my kittens Felix as that is what CP fed them.

However, I gradually changed them over to Grau, Smilla (Zooplus), and Lilys Kitchen (from my Vets). They wolf this food down and I can really see the difference as their fur is so shiny and soft (that could also be down to my weekly buffering!) I feed these foods in rotation so they don't get stuck to one brand or flavour.

When I was still trying to finish off my supply of Felix (I had bulk bought before getting the Furbies) I could see them just licking off the jelly and taking their time over the chunks. Totally disinterested in it.

I also feed a dry supply each day of Orijen (fish) and Hill's (Chicken) and they eat that at leisure over the day.

The only thing they didn't go for was scrambled egg or raw chicken chunks despite my lovingly preparing it.

Re: Question about changing kitten food

Adult versions of food are absolutely fine and there is very little difference in them.
