Help giving a tablet!

I need to give my two kittens a tablet morning and night, and it is proving to be a nightmare.

At first I just about managed it, but they are getting wise to it now and I am finding it impossible. As soon as I get it in they manage to get it straight out with their tongues. I have tried getting it to the back of their mouths, but they shake their heads non stop so it is really impossible.

I have watched youtube videos on the job, but they just aren't working in practice.

Any ideas gratefully received!

Re: Help giving a tablet!

I've used a pet piller like this one Kimball Animal Hospital + Pet Pillers in the past with great success on my cats.

Not sure how suitable they are for little kittens though.

Re: Help giving a tablet!

They on a controlled diet so I can't use food to tempt them I have thought about getting a pill popper, are they easy to use? The kittens aren't that small, although do have quite small mouths as they are exotics

Re: Help giving a tablet!

I found it very easy to use, although better for oblong shaped pills than round ones, and a very quick (and therefore lower stress) process.

I can definitely recommend it for effectiveness, but not being an expert I wouldn't want to recommend it for suitability for your particular kitties - maybe your vet could advise?

Re: Help giving a tablet!

Can't you use their own food to trick them? I'm worried about the piller because I've read that the dry pill can hurt their esophagus. I use to coat in butter and my cat loves it. I find a great advantage that it slides better and protects the mucosa.
Myanimalmadhouse likes this.

Re: Help giving a tablet!

If you wrap them in a thick towel or blanket a bit like people used to with babies so it also covers the back of their head it should help reduce them being able to shake their heads, also the covering the pill with butter is a great idea as it helps the taste and helps it slip down quicker

Re: Help giving a tablet!

Thanks for the advice, I will definately try butter next time - they do scrunch up their faces from the taste of the tablet so this will hopefully help!

Re: Help giving a tablet!

ive never had trouble given cats or dogs tablets, as long as when you open their mouths make sure you put the tablet right to the back of the tongue as far as you can.sometimes takes a couple of goes.

Re: Help giving a tablet!

Sometimes the vet says pills can be given crushed in food - could this apply in your case? Then I crush it between a bit of tin foil and before I feed my cats properly I mix the pill in about a dessert spoon of food and stand over them to make sure they eat their own. When they've finished that they can have the rest of their meal.
