Maine Coon grooming

So we've had MeMe for a good few weeks now.

She loves being groomed which is obviously a good thing and I've been trying to brush and comb her everyday but I'm struggling with her underside. She rolls over to let me groom her but after a short while just starts trying to play with the comb and so I don't get very far. I was wondering if anyone can give me tips as she's starting to get a little matted.

Re: Maine Coon grooming

I give Tango the brush to play with while I combe his pants etc Louie likes to stand up for his tummy to be brushed I hold him under his front legs so he's sat/stood up on his back legs & he leans back on me while I brush his tummy his pants are a two man job though

Ah, that's a great idea. I'll give her something to play with to distract her.

What brushes do you use? I'm using a slicker and an anti tangle comb.

Re: Maine Coon grooming

The pants are the problem with my two fluffies as well! I have various brushes and combs....currently liking one with the metal spines with bobbles on top.

Re: Maine Coon grooming

Chris,

You beat me to it! That was actually going to be my next question. Her fur is now starting to look quite greasy and I think I should probably bathe her. How often do you bathe yours and can I ask what shampoo/conditioner you use?

Also, what's a furminator???

Louise

Re: Maine Coon grooming

I use a flea comb, they work wonders and keep our boys fur nice and soft! They are great for getting out little or big tangles without hurting them too, Storm is prone to them under his front legpits
Storm doesn't like belly rubs much so doesn't exactly like the belly combs either, but it does help to stand him up on his back legs and give him a quick combing!

Re: Maine Coon grooming

I think I might have to invest in a Furminator and a flea comb!

What do you do when matts do develop? I think that I've let her get away with her belly being done thoroughly for too long and she does have a couple of matts that have developed. Do you just tease them out very slowly?
