Horrible horrible diarrhoea, help please!

Please help. We have a Siamese and two Oriental kittens.

The kittens came to us on RC 36 in June. We switched from
RC to Pets at Home's complete dry food for kittens upto 18mths so all cats were on the same food. We got tqo big bags. All was fine on the turkey one. At this point I was naively under the impression that dry food was healthiest.

We got a bit disorganised when we moved at the beginning of July and started the salmon one and their poos went squishy yuck. Then we had to use James Wellbeloved kitten for a couple of days and now they're on Applaws adult chicken which the pet shop guy (who feeds raw) said was fine for kittens. So they've had 3 dry foods over the last 4 weeks.

One of them has particularly vile yellowy poo now, Mickey. They're liquid and frequent and smell revolting. He's full of energy and looks well except he's smaller then Mallory (alwats was but maybe more now?) and always hungry. The whole house smells of diarrhoea and I'm about to have a breakdown. We have a two year old and this is a nightmare.

I'm aware that frequent sudden changes in diet are a bad idea but what's done is done. I'm contemplating raw or a combination of a good wet food and chicken wings or something but what do I do for now?

I feel like the whole house is contaminated. Do I stick it out and hope it sorts itself? Do I give them some probiotics? Is he really poorly and I'm stupidly blaming food? Do I take them to the vets? (funds are short at the moment so I'd rather not if possible)...or what?

Sorry for the ramble. Getting a bit desperate now.

Re: Horrible horrible diarrhoea, help please!

The changes in food certainly will not have helped, but from your description of the poo I would take him to the vets. Mine have had runny poo before, but it has never been yellow or liquid

Raw/wet is certainly the best course of action as for feeding, BUT, I would want him checked out just in case there is an underlying cause.

Yes you're probably right, poor little boy.

Re: Horrible horrible diarrhoea, help please!

Could it be worms or other parasites (giardia, coccidia)? Really foul smelling poo usually indicates some kind of parasite. I'd get that checked, definitely, and probiotics are never a bad idea.

Good luck with them. We'd love some pictures when you get a chance!

Re: Horrible horrible diarrhoea, help please!

How long has the diarrhoea been going on for.Kittens can go down hill very quickly and become dehydrated with runny tums so I would at least phone your vet for advice or pop him in for a check sooner rather than later. As GWM says that doesnt sound like it is food change related.

They were all flea/worm treated a few weeks ago, would that cover all bases re parasites?

He's had diarrhoea for over a week? Hard to tell whose poos they are but I saw him do a liquid yellowy one 30 mins ago. Vets are shut til Monday so will try then.

Here they are...

Agree with everyone. The colour, odour and consistency of the stools definely point to a vet visit as soon as you can.

All vets have an out of hours surgery.I think it advisable to phone for advice rather than to wait until monday.

I've phoned them and am awaiting a call back. Sounds like because he's hydrated and energetic etc it's a case of monitoring him til Monday and then taking him in.
