Unhappy Cat not eating OR drinking

Last night I noticed a small-ish amount of dried runny poo stuck to the fur around Lucky's bum, so I gently removed it with a pet wet wipe. She wasn't too impressed and went off to sit on her own, which is what she usually does after having her nails trimmed, so I wasn't worried. I checked the litter boxes and there was some soft (but not diarrhea) stools there which I assumed were hers.

However since then, she's been very subdued and hasn't eaten or drunk a thing to my knowledge . I've tried tempting her with her favourite wet food, dry food, and tuna fish but shows no interest. She's a bit better in herself today (she purred a bit) and seems slightly happier, but still subdued and listless. Of course I'm taking her later to the vets, but in the meantime is there anything I can try? How worried should I be? How dangerous is 18 hours without water for a cat? She's 2 years old and 3 kg. Thanks for any help!

Re: Cat not eating OR drinking

Glad to see you have a vet visit sorted. That is the best thing to do.

In the meantime, do you have a syringe in the house which you could use to drop some water into her. It is very important to keep her hydrated, more so if she's had a runny bottom. If not, use a teaspoon. As long as you sweet talk her the whole time, she shouldn't get too stressed by this.

What time is your vet appt??

Re: Cat not eating OR drinking

Definitely a trip the vet.

If you haven't syringed a cat before than I would be very careful and would wait until you get to the vet. If done wrongly it can go down their lungs instead and cause pneumonia etc.

Please update when you are back from the vets.

Thanks for the advice. I do have a syringe and managed to get a few ml of water into her before she protested too much. Will that tide her over or should I try again? It got to the point where she was refusing to swallow any more and just let whatever I dropped in there dribble out. Going to the vets 3 hours from now.

I have syringed before and was very careful. She's one of the ones I had to syringe feed from aged 1 week. Still have some (unused) syringes from then left over from when the vet gave me a whole bunch to feed them with.

Re: Cat not eating OR drinking

Vet gave her 3 injections, an antibiotic, an anti-spasmodic (to settle the tum and digestion system, not sure if that's the correct English medical term), and one to bring her temp down (it was 40). Her weight was normal. Vet didn't think she was very dehydrated from the elasticity of the skin.

Vet thinks she's not eating or drinking simply because she doesn't feel well. Vet hopes that it was just something she ate (although all my other cats are fine) and when she starts to feel better after her temp comes down and the anti-spasmodic takes effect, she'll start eating and drinking again. She's in a separate room now to monitor her.

If she doesn't improve this evening I'm to take her temp and try to give her a few ml of water via syringe. If the temp is still high or she vomits the water back up (which she didn't earlier) I'm to take her back tonight. We're going back tomorrow regardless.

O dear. Well, sounds like "a virus of unknown origin" that my Girly had a while back. A visit to the vet, some ani-inflammatories for the fever, some antibiotics and she was up and about in a few days.
Wishing her a speedy recovery.
