Pigs Liver

Most of the liver I've seen mentioned in threads on here is either ox, chicken or lamb (which I understand requires more).

Is pigs liver less commonly used for a reason? Or is it just tied in with the fact that cats in this country don't seem to be fed pig products in general? Just wondering so I don't end up buying something wrong/unsuitable

Re: Pigs Liver

I am sure that British pork is safe....in other countries raw pork can contain parasites ( sorry can't remember the name) so is not advised for raw feeding. Pig products are in general MUCH cheaper than lamb or beef and my cats quite like them.

Re: Pigs Liver

Pig liver is just fine raw as long it is British. If you are worried about parasites then pop it into the freezer first for a couple of days before feeding.

And DT, as always is right , feed sparingly as it contains a whack of Vitamin A, which gets stored in the body by its nature of being fat soluble rather than water soluble.

Re: Pigs Liver

Thanks for that.

This was just to supplement the DAF minces after the news that came to light about the lack of liver included. Was going to go by the 4g of liver per 100g mince. Is that going to be too much? Is it a case of don't feed too much in one sitting (and therefore it's better for a small amount each day), or more a case of don't feed too much overall?

Ah, I see. It is the case of not feeding too much overall and over an extended period of time because it gets stored in the body. So, if you can daily feed the rightish amount, the better. For fiddly things like that I like to use icecube trays. Weigh up the amount you need, portion it up, freeze it in icecube trays and you can just pop out and defrost the tiny amount you need.

I defy you to try pig kidney though - that is the only raw food that smells really really strongly

Re: Pigs Liver

Funny, mine turned their noses up at raw pig kidney, but my friendly butcher often gives me a couple free and I did not want to waste them. I lightly pan fry them now ( !!! ) and the cats go crazy for them!
