Reaction to flea treatment???

I have just this second treated my cats with effipro spot on. The treatment is for 1kg cats and over.

Anyway as soon as i put it on their skin between their shoulders they had a reaction to it. They ran around the room at top speed before falling from side to side. And drooling very heavily.

They seem ok ish now but it was scary to see it. The smaller cat of the two is still a bit dopey.

Is this a normal reaction???

It doesn't sound normal, I would phone your vet and tell them what happened and see what they advise.

Certainly not! Also interesting that both cats suffered the same adverse reaction-yes, this is what it is. Think this needs to be reported to the VMD.

Here's a link for online reporting.

Hope they're OK now since you contacted the vets.

1 thing to add, if your cats aren't 100% okay now then give them a good bathe. Fipronil stays on / in the skin so can be washed off to some degree unlike systemic treatments. The quicker this is done after treatment the better the result.

Re: Reaction to flea treatment???

Hiya thanks for the replys.

Rang the vet and they said, its an adverse reaction and to watch them and make sure they drink plenty of water. Bring them in if they get worse.

Luckily they seem fine now. Thank god! almost had a heart attack. We have them seperated so they cannot lick it off. Not really sure how long i should do this for?

They are back to normal near enough. same suffocating selfs

Eating and drinking like its their last meal

Will look into reporting it

Re: Reaction to flea treatment???

Is the product a supermarket brand? Really, it is best to only use flea treatments as prescribed by a vet, even if it costs more. The rubbish they sell at supermarkets are not worth the possible tragic effects.
Eat bread and jam for a week if you have to.

Effipro, from Googling it is made by Virbac. They're a very large and as far as I know reputable pharmaceutical company based in France. I use Frontline on my cats and they don't like the smell. I think it has alcohol in it and last time I spotted Simba, he was running around as if to escape from the smell that was following him everywhere. If either of the cats get a lick of it, it makes them drool. Having said that, the falling over bit is a bit scary!!

Re: Reaction to flea treatment???

I avoid supermarcket crap like the plague.

And they didnt lick it at all. I put her on the floor and she sat there and immediatly started drooling. Then started running around and flopping from side to side.

They are both fine now though. I bought a new toy yesterday. A large mouse on a bit of rope and they LOVE it. They been playing with it for the past 2 hours.

And im finding dead fleas everywhere bonus
