NI mince questions

Hey there

Am starting on the NI minces today which so far seem a sucess as Jango has eaten much more than he usually would and with FAR more enthusiasm!

however I have a few questions about how to feed him the minces

1. How long do I let them defrost?
2. I know 1 packet lasts about 3-4 days so do I store it in the fridge in between or do I need to keep the rest frozen and try and hack the mince apart?
3. How long can I leave it down for before I have to pick it up? Jango likes to go back to his food over the course of the morning so I will have to get him out of that habit I fear when its NI mince for dinner (he will still be getting Grau, Bozita and Animoda as well)
4. finally, how long can I leave the mince in the fridge for? i.e. if I start him on the mince on a monday, do I have to feed it 4 days in a row to finish it asap?

Many thanks

You can defrost the whole box and leave it in the fridge - sometimes the boxes leak so i put them into another box3. How long can I leave it down for before I have to pick it up? Jango likes to go back to his food over the course of the morning so I will have to get him out of that habit I fear when its NI mince for dinner (he will still be getting Grau, Bozita and Animoda as well) - I don't have this problem as Lola eats it all in one go - I would take it up after half an hour though4. finally, how long can I leave the mince in the fridge for? i.e. if I start him on the mince on a monday, do I have to feed it 4 days in a row to finish it asap? I would try and finish it quickly as four days is the max it should be kept in the fridge for (think of it as normal mince when the box has been opened). You could always alternate his food per day rather than per meal - i.e. give him NI minces all day Monday, normal wet Tuesday and finish the NI wednesday. Not sure if this is the right thing to do but I wouldn't personally leave it in the fridge too long. Many thanks

My answers are above (hopefully for you) - this is just what I do though, others may differ

Re: NI mince questions

First things first though. Jango is a kitten, right? So, technically he can eat as much of this stuff as he wants so a carton might not last 3-4 days.

To 1. How long do I let them defrost? I take the raw food out of the freezer about 24hrs beforehand and let it defrost slowly in the fridge.

To 2. I know 1 packet lasts about 3-4 days so do I store it in the fridge in between or do I need to keep the rest frozen and try and hack the mince apart? If he is a kitten then it might not last that long. I personally wouldn't keep raw meat in the fridge for longer than 3 days. If you find he is not going to go through a trough in time, then your only way is to let it partly defrost (only as much as you need to work with it), take out how much you need for a couple of days and refreeze the rest

To 3. How long can I leave it down for before I have to pick it up? Depends on the weather really and how cool your house is. The one way round this might be to only offer him small meals so that everything gets eaten in one go.

To 4. finally, how long can I leave the mince in the fridge for? See under 2.

Hope that helps

Re: NI mince questions

I do similar to Kirsty. Normally take the tub out of the freezer the day before I need it to let it defrost in the fridge - I take the tub out of the fridge an hour before every meal time to let it come to room temperature, then serve. Mine eat theirs straightaway, especially as there's never a great deal there but I'd probably agree on no longer that 30mins or so left out.

Keeping it defrosted in the fridge for 4 days is a maximum I'd say, going on their guidelines.

Re: NI mince questions

thanks all for the answers

I offer Jango as much food as he wants all the time, but he never eats very much, never has
I leave dry food down all the time but he never touches that at all (I have been weighing it at the beginning and end of the day) - even tried some different brands and he is just not interested...

slightly worried about what I am going to do when I start work next week. Thinking of getting one of the automatic feeders I can put wet food in so he has covered fresh wet food several times a day? Would this work?

He has eaten probably about 30g of the NI fresh mince this morning which is I suppose quite a good portion for such a little guy! Will give him some more at lunch time and dinner time and then see how much we can get him through

He is still gaining weight just fine and poops enough to let me know that his insides are just fine, lol

thanks again for the help

Re: NI mince questions

Well, gone on the little guy to decide that dry food is not for him. Count your blessings on that front

Curious now, you say that he has access to as much food as he wants (I presume you also count the dry food that he doesn't touch). So, when you offer him raw food, how much do you put on a plate? 30g and it just takes him a while to munch through that? Or do you offer more and throw a lot out?

Yes, an automatic feeder might be a solution for when you start work but remember that you might have to teach him the robes...

PS: How old is he now?

Re: NI mince questions

I have only started raw today, before we were feeding wet food, mainly Animoda Carny (am waiting on an order from zooplus atm). I have been feeding him several times a day (first thing in the morning, then about 11am, 2pm, 4pm, 7pm) and I know that he ALWAYS goes back and eats as I hear him/see him eating from his bowl (over the dry food which he completely ignores)

I take the food up if it goes crusty/dry. I have no flies in the flat as I have fly guards on the windows so am not worried about germs in that respect.

I still end up throwing away quite a bit of wet food in a day though. I would say he goes through about 160-180g of Animoda/day. On a really good day he might eat up to 220g (I sometimes mix in a bit of Applaws kitten to make him eat if I worry he isn't eating enough) I have rarely seen him clean his bowl

He still put on 300g in the 3 weeks I have had him though, so not been too worried.

He's 2 days off being 4 months old now

PS: worth mentioning that sometimes I put food down and he will just ignore it completely - I can't seem to put it down to a particular flavour as other days he seems to like it

Re: NI mince questions

What I would do is feed a whole box of NI over 2/3 days and then move onto a tin of Animonda, then back to raw etc. This way both foods are eaten while still fresh which cats always seem to prefer.
I have to say I have become far more relaxed about leaving raw food down as my kittens are nibblers and go back several times to eat little bits over the course of several hours, they also prefer food at room temperature and even a bit crusty! I know of raw feeders in US etc where it is far hotter than here and they too leave the food out with no food poisoning issue.

Re: NI mince questions

Only a wee tiddly suggestion here hun for your wet food....

When I changed my bunch over to the Smilla they were quite so-so about eating it. Having ordered a 24-can batch this did not go down well with me.

I then tried adding warm water to it before putting it down..... Well after that, they just SCOFFED it up like you wouldn't believe!!!!! I now add approx 2 dessert spoons per 200g'ish to each dish at meal times and have had no further problems.

I think the good food is just SO dense that it could be a bit of hard work for some cats and the extra water helps to combat that problem. It certainly seemed to be with case with mine.

I hope that it helpful for you.
