Flea Treatment

Hello!

Sure this topic has been raised time and time again so apologises.

I have two cats who go outdoors. The vet said that Dizzy may have a flea allergy and to use the frontline every 4 weeks.

To be honest we didnt keep to the 4 weeks over the winter and his allergy & the fleas were fine. We used the frontline every 8 weeks or so which worked well.

We have just applied the frontline and its like we have tried to murder them!

My main concern is that it seems to make their necks sore...there are no open lesions or anything. I left one of the packs open on the side for 10 minutes last time and it burnt the varnish off the table! I dont care about the table but what about their skin?

I dont really like using strong chemicals for the sake of it, however dont want Dizzy's allergy to flair up or fleas everywhere. Just wondering what other peoples opinions/options are?

Thanks
Zoe x

Re: Flea Treatment

Since they are outdoor cats and they may have a flea allergy then pre-emptive treatment is necessary in my opinion.

First of all, the cats will be in a little discomfort when you first apply Frontline, this will be exacerbated if they have been bitten around the application area. However, if this is more than just a little discomfort or lasts more than an hour after application then I'd take it as a sign that Frontline is not for your cats.

Fleas are also known to become resilient to Frontline over time, so it will lose its effectiveness in a regular application scenario.

My advice would be to get some Advocate from your vet, its much more tolerable for your cats and won't take the varnish off of your table! Not to mention that it is incredibly effective. You could also try applying to only one cat a month and alternating cats so they get a longer break between applications, although in high flea density areas I'm not sure how effective this would be. In winter you can probably forego treatment for November, December and January.

Advocate will get any fleas in your house as well as do earmites, roundworms and other worms whose names escape me, and it stays effective for about 4-6 weeks after application.
