Cats tail amputation following accident...dont rush into deciding.

A word of advice following advice given to me by my vet. Matilda my dwarf size mixed breed pussy cat had a nasty accident where she was hit by a car and her hip was broken away from her spine and fractured in several places.
My vet after operating very successfully to repair her hip took her in for a second operation to 'dock' her tail. I challenged the vets decision and was strongly advised to have the amputation done. Matildas tail was not working as the nerve supplying it was affected by the RTA. It would drag behind her.
I had had a major spinal op myself and knew that temporary paralysis of a certain area can be caused by swelling of soft tissue around a nerve and to allow healing to naturally occur. So Matilda did not have her tail amputated and after careful observation that the circulation had not been severed she fully regained feeling and use of her tail She now proudly carries it in the air with the tip touching the back of her neck!!! I dread to think how many poor cats have lost their tails unnecessarily.
Ianthi and MoggyBaby like this.

Welcome to the Pet's Forum and thank you for posting such an informative piece. I am delighted that Matilda has made such a good recovery AND still carries her tail with such pride.

Please post up some piccies so that we can all admire your little girls' beautiful appearance.

Yes, indeed thank you very much for posting your experience.

Agree completely about the wisdom of researching conditions yourself particularly when faced with serious irrevocable procedures like amputations and PTS. Very often a new vet will have a different perspective on what appears to be the 'only way forward' by another. Likewise no vet has a crystal ball and very often poor prognoses turn into many more years!
