Exclamation Nursing and Sore

My cat Jayne recently had six kittens. The kittens are about three weeks old.
When the kittens nurse, they tend to scratch up Jayne's belly around the nipples. She is really sore all of the time now, to the point where she will meow in pain when they feed.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what I could do to help her? Maybe some sort of kitty-friendly cream or something?

Re: Nursing and Sore

try trimming kitties nails so they are not so sharp. I always trim nails on a regular basis. this may help. I would be careful of creams as kitties are suckling this area also. maybe ask your vet if their is something you can use?
but I would def have someone help you and trim the babies claws.. just the wee tips baby nail clippers will do the trick

Re: Nursing and Sore

I'm probably 2 late 4 this post...but when my cat was almost due (her first & hopefully only litter), and her nipples looked red & swollen, I knew nursing would leave them cracked & sore (like all new moms!) So I would rub vaseline on them and kinda pinch them (not hard)...the vaseline would soothe them & keep them moisturized, and if she licked it off I wouldn't hurt her. The slightly pinching them kinda 'toughened' 'em up 2 get her ready. It did work, she never had one problem w/them!
