Advice on caring for a tom kitten after neutering
Can anyone advise me on the best way to look after my boy post neutering? I've had three girls in the past and I'm aware that neutering for girls is a bigger op so i'm a bit at a loss to know how to help him recuperate following his little op Although he's an 'only child' technically he spends a lot of time also with my mother who has his brother - who will also be undertaking the op - and we are both wondering whether a period apart might be wise. They wrestle and tussle so much we're both concerned about risk to stitches etc. [I presume he will have some??]
What have other people done to support their boys? BTW I feel so horribly guilty about this op - far more so than when I had my girls done for some reason. I know all the good and sound reasons for putting him through it but I'm really having the collywobbles about it. |

Re: Advice on caring for a tom kitten after neutering
Oscar had a normal procedure and by the time I collected him 5hrs later, he was eating normally and when he came home he ate LOADS more (like he had the munchies) and was as playful as ever.
Wilbur had a slightly more complicated procedure and needed stitches as one of his balls hadn't distended so his belly had to be cut to remove it. He was as hungry as Oscar but slightly more subdued and seemed a bit unsteady on his feet. Neither seemed in pain and by the next morning both were the same as normal. They both had a check up after the weekend and Wilbur will be taken back on Monday to have his stitches removed. I had them blood tested before the procedure, but it isn't absolutely necessary but is offered by some vets to ensure there are no hidden conditions that may cause a reaction due to the GA. As I didn't know any history from their Mum, except that she is FIV negative I thought it best to have the test done. I am sure all will be fine ![]() |

Re: Advice on caring for a tom kitten after neutering
Thanks for your views. It's just the thought of it that upsets me and I know I'm being completely ridiculous about it. It's absolutely the right thing to do for all kinds of very sensible reasons. I'll keep repeating them to myself and hopefully by the time we leave for the vets I'll have myself convinced.
